But instead of packing up the kids, wrangling them onto a plane, and then waiting in line to get into the park, just grab Lego’s new towering Disney Castle and give your family a staycation instead. Weighing in at 4,080 pieces, Lego’s new Disney Castle was modeled after the Cinderella Castle that’s visible from almost everywhere inside Walt Disney World.
Its spires and fairy tale-inspired architecture are instantly recognizable, and while Lego’s take is no where near as grandiose as the original, this model still stands almost 30-inches tall to the tip of its tallest tower. And while it might be cheaper than the park’s ticket prices and airfare to Orlando, when available Disney’s Castle will still set you back $350 making it as expensive as the Lego Ghostbusters Firehouse HQ set, but with less included pieces. Lego’s Disney Castle does come with five Disney minifigures including Donald and Daisy, Minnie and Mickey (wearing a dapper tuxedo) and Tinkerbell. Lego is obviously positioning this new castle as the perfect place to display all of the Disney minifigures you’ve painstakingly collected. On the outside Lego’s designers have done a fantastic job at recreating all of the subtle details of Walt Disney World’s Cinderella’s Castle, but the set isn’t only meant to be a replica you display on a shelf. Inside it’s packed full of smaller themed rooms featuring nods to well-known Disney movies like Beauty and the Beast, Snow White, Aladdin, Cinderella, Fantasia and more.
Like it or not, that tiny candelabra might be the closest thing you’ll ever get to a Lumière minifigure. Does that justify this set’s $350 price tag? Disney’s newest animated feature, Moana, is the story of a little girl from the Pacific Islands who encounters a demigod on her journey to save her people. The movie comes out this Wednesday, but we haven’t gotten a good official look at the LEGO sets accompanying it until now. There are two sets, each featuring Moana (voiced by Auli’i Cravalho) as a minidoll, and the larger set also features demigod Maui (voiced by Dwayne Johnson) as a large, Hulk-style figure. We’ll be bringing you an early hands-on review of both sets in a few weeks, before they’re due to hit stores. Everyone’s favourite mermaid, Princess Ariel, makes an appearance in 41145 Ariel and the Magical Spell. This cute undersea playset depicts the moment Ariel makes her ill-advised deal with Ursula the Sea Witch, gaining feet, but losing her voice in the process. The set contains 222 pieces and will retail at $29.99 Back on dry land, we find a scrubbed-up cleaning lady hitting the town in 41146 Cinderella’s Enchanted Evening. We get Cinderella’s little house, with broom (naturally), and a pumpkin patch all ready for plundering to provide the magical mode of conveyance — the coach. The coach is nicely-shaped, and in white compared with the blue versions we’ve had previously.
No coachman though — seems this is one Princess who does her own driving. One interesting set I found a bit surprising is the #41148 LEGO Disney Princess Frozen Ice Palace. As you probably know, LEGO already got the #41062 LEGO Disney Princess Frozen Elsa’s Sparkling Ice Castle, which was first released back in 2015. It’s an extremely popular set that is often on backorder, so I guess LEGO decided to make a new one. The new #41148 LEGO Disney Princess Frozen Ice Palace (see above) is 701 pieces, so it is almost two and a half times larger than the 292-piece #41062 LEGO Disney Princess Frozen Elsa’s Sparking Ice Castle (see below). A
nd while the 2015 castle is definitely nice with all those snowy white, cool mint, soft lavender, and sparkly blue pieces, the new palace is even nicer with more substantial walls, opening gates, and a larger second-story balcony. If you already have the first set, you may still want to get the second one to create an even larger layout. And if you have been putting off buying the 2015 set because it is a bit small, you might like the 2017 version better. Another new Disney Frozen set next year will be the #41147 LEGO Disney Princess Frozen Anna’s Snow Adventure (see below). It is a small set, with only 153 pieces, but Anna comes with a very pretty new dress, and there are some other nice elements and colors as well. There will be a third Disney Frozen set as well, but this one in the LEGO Juniors line – meaning, that it is easier to build for younger kids. The #10736 LEGO Juniors Anna and Elsa’s Frozen Playground (see below) got the same color-scheme as the larger castle and palace, so if you like, you can get it as another extension.
