According to new data, the U.S. ranks first in the total number of COVID-19 cases, new cases per day and deaths. Genevieve Briand, associate director of the Master of Applied Economics program at Johns Hopkins University, critically analyzed the impact of COVID-19 on U.S. mortality using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in her webinar titled "Covid-19 Deaths: A Look at U.S. Data."
From mid-March to mid-September, the total death rate in the U.S. was 1.7 million, of which 200,000, or 12% of total deaths, are related to COVID-19. Instead of directly investigating DEATHS from COVID-19, Brian focused on the total number of deaths by age group and cause of death in the U.S. and used this information to shed light on the effects of COVID-19.
She found that the impact of COVID-19 on mortality in the U.S. can only be fully understood by comparing it to the total number of deaths in the U.S.
After getting data from the CDC's website, Brian compiled a graph showing the percentages of total deaths by age from early February to early September, which includes the period from when COVID-19 was detected in the U.S. to the time when infection rates soared.

Surprisingly, mortality among the elderly before and after the spread of COVID-19 has not changed. "The reason we have more COVID-19 deaths among older people than among younger people is because every day in the U.S., older people just die in greater numbers than younger people," Brian said.
Brian also noted that there have been between 50,000 and 70,000 deaths both before and after COVID-19, indicating that this number of deaths was normal long before COVID-19 appeared. Thus, according to Brian, COVID-19 not only did not affect the mortality rate among the elderly, but also did not increase the total number of deaths.
An analysis of these data shows that, unlike most people's assumptions, the number of deaths from COVID-19 is not a concern. In fact, COVID-19 has had little impact on mortality in the United States.
For many, this is a shock. How is it that this data is so far from our perception?
To answer this question, Briand turned her attention to mortality rates by cause of death between 2014 and 2020. In 2020, due to COVID-19, there was a sudden increase in deaths. This is not surprising because COVID-19 appeared in the U.S. in early 2020, and thus the number of COVID-19-related deaths has subsequently skyrocketed.
A 2018 analysis of cause-specific mortality showed that the seasonal increase in total deaths is the result of an increase in all-cause mortality. The three "leaders" include heart disease, respiratory diseases, influenza and pneumonia.
"This is true for every year. Every year in the U.S., when we see seasonal ups and downs, we have an increase in the number of deaths from all causes," said Brian.
When Briand reviewed the 2020 data during this seasonal period, the number of COVID-19-related deaths exceeded the number of deaths from heart disease. This was highly unusual, as heart disease has always led the way as the leading cause of death. However, looking at the number of dead, she noticed something strange. When Brian compared the number of deaths for each of the specific causes during this period from 2018 to 2020, she noticed that instead of the expected sharp increase for all causes, there was a significant decrease in deaths from heart disease.
What's even more surprising is that a sudden decline in mortality is seen for all other reasons.

This trend is completely contrary to the pattern observed in all previous years. Interestingly, the overall decline in deaths from other causes is almost exactly equal to the increase in deaths from COVID-19. According to Brian, this suggests that the number of deaths from COVID-19 is deceptive. Brian believes that deaths from heart disease, respiratory disease, influenza and pneumonia could "attribute" COVID-19.

All deaths "related" to COVID-19 have been classified simply by the CDC as "COVID-19 deaths." Even patients who die from other underlying diseases but are infected with COVID-19 are considered dead from COVID-19. This is probably the main explanation for why deaths from COVID-19 have skyrocketed and deaths from all other diseases have dropped significantly.
"All of this points to a lack of evidence that COVID-19 has led to excess mortality. The total number of deaths does not exceed the normal number of deaths. We found no evidence to the contrary," Briand concluded.
In an interview with The News-Letter, Briand raised the question of whether it could be said that deaths from COVID-19 are misleading indicators, since this infection could exacerbate other underlying diseases and even lead to death from other underlying diseases.
"If [the COVID-19 death rate] weren't misleading, then we should have seen both an increase in heart attacks and an increase in COVID-19. But reducing the number of heart attacks and all other causes of death gives us no choice but to point out some incorrect classification," Brian replied.
In other words, the impact of COVID-19 on mortality in the U.S. is considered problematic only when it significantly increases the total number of deaths or the true burden of death in addition to expected deaths from other causes. Since the total number of deaths from all causes before and after COVID-19 remained the same, Brian said it is unlikely that deaths from COVID-19 are a concern.
Brian also mentioned that more research and new data are needed to reliably decipher the impact of COVID-19 on mortality in the United States.
During the conversation, Brian constantly stressed that COVID-19 is a serious national and global problem. But she also stressed that society should never lose sight of the bigger picture — mortality in general.
Brian explained that the death of a loved one from COVID-19 or other causes is always tragic. Every life is equally important, and we should be reminded that even during a global pandemic, we must not forget the tragic loss of life from other causes.
According to Brian, the excessive exaggeration of the number of deaths from COVID-19 may be due to the constant emphasis on DEATHS associated with COVID-19 and the habitual ignoring of deaths from other natural causes in society.
In an interview with The News-Letter after the webinar "Covid-19 Deaths: A Look at U.S. Data," Purna Dharmasena, a Master of Applied Economics candidate, expressed his opinion on Brian's concluding remarks. "At the end of the day, it's still a deadly virus. And whether there is exaggeration or not, it doesn't matter to a certain extent," Dharmasena said.
When asked whether to inform the public about this exaggeration of the mortality rate, Dharmasena stated that people have a right to know the truth. However, COVID-19 should be constantly treated as a deadly disease to protect vulnerable populations.
