After serving in the army, he enrolled in the Economics Department of the University of Oslo, then married a classmate Ingrid (now Stoltenberg has two adult children). After graduating from high school, Jens decided to become a journalist and got a job at Arbeiderbladet, drawing public attention with fervent articles urging the Norwegian authorities to withdraw from the aggressive NATO bloc.
It was then that he was noticed in the KGB's residence in the Soviet embassy.

For Jens it was a sore subject: he saw perfectly how all the higher circles of Norway prefer to hush up their role in the events of the Second World War. Yes, Kvisling, like some of his high-ranking henchmen, was executed, but many officials of the occupation administration, who cooperated with the Germans, got away with very minor punishments. The same Axel Heiberg was initially sentenced to 20 years in prison, but in 1956 he, like all other ministers from the cabinet of Kvisling, was pardoned and sent on a well-deserved rest - to his own villa near a quiet forest lake.
But most importantly, the policy of denation almost did not affect those industrialists who regularly supplied products and raw materials for the needs of the Wehrmacht. In power in Norway were formally socialists from the respectable and bourgeois People's Workers' Party of Norway, but in reality the country was ruled by the same representatives of the richest family clans.
They communicated more and more often. Stoltenberg was willing to work for the Soviets, but only - in this matter he was principled - on a completely voluntary basis. That is, no subscriptions about cooperation, no obligations and, most importantly, no monetary rewards.
"I don't want anyone to be able to reproach me for being a material interest," he explained. "No, this is a matter of principle: we meet and talk only for ideological reasons.

May 22, 1991. Senior KGB Chief Major Mikhail Butkov disappeared from the embassy in Oslo unexpectedly. Just in the afternoon went somewhere on business - Butkov worked under the cover of the correspondent of the newspaper "Working Tribune" and often rotated in secular circles. Anxiety decided not to raise ahead of time: there is little where the operative went, with whom does not happen.
Three days later, Butkov showed up. I called my wife:
"Marina, I will not return to Moscow. Take the kids and come to me.

The concerned ambassador decided to immediately appeal to Interpol with a request to investigate the disappearance of the Soviet journalist.
And then they were refused. Interpol representatives referred to a report by a Western radio station that a certain Butkov had sought political asylum in the UK. And now he is under the tutelage of British counterintelligence.
And three days later his colleague Boris Kirillov found out with what luggage Butkov escaped to the British.
Interestingly, Major Butkov was also a representative of the elitist golden youth, but only the Soviet spill. His father, a colonel in the GRU, provided his son with an admission to the Institute of Military Translators, then promoted to the KGB and enrolled in the prestigious Andropov Institute of Intelligence. His parents arranged the marriage of Michael: he was married to Marina, the daughter of a general of the GRU. Soon they had two sons.
In Oslo, the Butkovs came to everything ready - they were provided with a luxurious apartment in the city center, a brand new volvo car and a salary of $1,000 a month (at 1989 prices it is a huge money even for Norway).
The wealth received for nothing, as is often the case, turned its head, and Butkov decided that he was allowed absolutely everything. He became interested in gambling in the casino and came close to the young beauty Maria Nikolaeva-Gremitzka - the daughter of a KGB colonel, she worked in Oslo in the office of "Intourist", and her husband served as the press attache of the embassy.
In 1990, Maria and her husband returned to Moscow, but at the same time she and Butkov continued to call regularly on the phone: an impressionable young lady in paints told what a nightmare is happening in the socialist homeland. It was then that Butkov and matured a plan how to arrange paradise life with his girlfriend - and so that influential parents could not get them.
He joined the British intelligence agency MI6 in Oslo and offered his services in exchange for asylum in London and decent maintenance. The British agreed and set a condition: Butkov will have to reveal the name of Agent Steklov.
I had to take a vacation and go to Moscow, where the truth reigned strange times: the state secret he was given for a symbolic bribe: a pair of sticks of servetta and a bottle of French cognac. Of course, it was necessary to know the right people from the higher offices of the First - intelligence - KGB administration, but the father of his "intourist" goddess helped with this.
Then Butkov returned to Oslo and waited for a conditional signal. In May 1991, Maria, who had by then divorced her husband, travelled to Stockholm with her six-year-old daughter. Butkov disappeared from the embassy on the same day.
In Stockholm, the lovers surrendered to British intelligence, and they were transferred to London. However, once in Britain, Butkov panicked - remembered about the abandoned sons, and then the British allowed to invite his wife and children.
In England, defectors were awarded with dignity: Butkov, who changed his name to Michael Newman, was given a house in a fashionable suburb on the banks of the Thames and the status of a retired British secret service with a decent pension. Like many defectors, he had a taste for literary creativity and wrote a book of memoirs. However, a quiet writer's life did not work: already in 2001 Butkov was convicted by the criminal court of London for large financial frauds - as it turned out, together with his wife, he organized a gang of fraudsters, luring from the pocket of gullible Russian businessmen money to study at a non-existent school of management in California.
After Butkov's escape from Norway, eight Soviet diplomats were expelled "for activities incompatible with their official status." Among them was a KGB resident and his assistant, the embassy's cultural attache Boris Kirillov.
After the "exposure" Jens got away with only a slight fright. It is not known what works Stoltenberg Sr. should hush up the scandal, but in the end counterintelligence believed that Jens did not know that he was communicating with a KGB agent, and if he guessed about it, he did not have time to pass any important information.
And after a while, the fully justified Stoltenberg was appointed an official to the government's defense commission.

In the 1990s, Stoltenberg made a dizzying career: leader of the NPR, member of parliament and Minister for Trade and Energy, Minister of Finance.
Even the high-profile scandal that erupted in the late 1990s around the leadership of the Youth Workers League, mired in financial fraud, did not stop his career. It turned out that the league leaders deliberately overestimated the number of members of the organization: the larger the composition of the organization, the greater the amount of public funding. As a result, two former league leaders received prison sentences, but Stoltenberg, who led the league at the time of the crime, remained in the status of a witness: somehow Jens again managed to convince the investigation that he knew nothing about the machinations under his nose.
In 2000, he became the youngest prime minister in The History of Norway.
Then he held this post for only a year and a half and was forced to leave after a scandal related to the escape from the scene of an accident. Leaving the parking lot, Stoltenberg hit someone else's car. He stopped, sketched his personal details and phone number on a piece of paper, stuck a note under the wipers on the windshield and calmly drove away - so hundreds of road accidents across Europe end. But it soon became clear that Stoltenberg had left a blank piece of paper. When this story surfaced in the press, Jens paid for the repair of the car from the party cash register, than only added fuel to the fire.
Stoltenberg returned to the premiership in 2005. And he hasn't left it for eight years. He even managed to turn in his favor the death of his younger sister Nini, a well-known TV presenter who died of a heroin overdose.
The most serious test for Stoltenberg was the terrorist attacks organized in July 2011 by Anders Breivik, which killed 77 people. The actions of the lone killer shocked the Norwegians, and further shocked them with the slowness of the police, who too late reached the island of Utoya, allowing Breivik to quietly shoot the teenagers. That's when Stoltenberg remembered everything: his sympathies for Muslims from the Taliban and Hamas (Norway was the only European country that officially negotiated with these groups), and failed police reforms, and more.
Stoltenberg resigned, and in the new elections decided to fight with renewed energy for the return. He even dressed as a taxi driver to communicate unobtrusively with his constituents. The videos, which were filmed as if by a hidden camera, where Stoltenberg twisted the ram of the old Mercedes, bypassed all Norwegian TV channels. However, it later turned out that the taxi passengers were fake actors. And Stoltenberg, showered with ridicule, lost the election with a bang.
