 Claim

 A method for producing graphene in liquid nitrogen using pulsed laser radiation, characterized in that the graphite surface is treated with a laser beam with a pulse duration of the order of 10-13 s, moving along the target surface at a speed that provides 75% overlap of the spots of laser pulses.

 Description of the invention to the patent

 The invention relates to the field of production of carbon nanostructures and can be used to obtain graphene for use as a basis for materials and elements of nanoelectronics, nanophotonics, gas sensors and laser systems with ultrashort radiation pulses.

 All currently known methods for producing graphene can be divided into two groups: synthesis and separation. The first group includes such methods as the synthesis of graphene by chemical vapor deposition, the production of graphene in an electric arc, thermal decomposition of silicon carbide, epitaxial growth on a metal surface, etc. They allow the formation of high-quality graphene, but they are rather lengthy and expensive, since they involve the use of complex specific equipment and the fulfillment of strict technological conditions. At the same time, to obtain free graphene, special separation and purification procedures are required. The second group includes such methods as micromechanical exfoliation of graphite, liquid-phase exfoliation of graphite, oxidation of graphite, etc. They are easier to implement, but have significant drawbacks. This is, first of all, a small fraction of the yield of graphene of the required quality and the need for its purification from the accompanying material and used technological media (Eletskiy A.V., Iskandarova I.M., Knizhnik A.A. et al. Graphene: methods of production and thermophysical properties . Uspekhi fizicheskikh nauk, 2011, v. 181, no. 3, pp. 233-250).

 A known method for the formation of graphene by stratification of graphite (see patent US 20130102084 A1, IPC C01B 31/04, H01L 51/00, H01L 51/42, publ .: 04/25/2013), combining a number of options involving the introduction into the space between atomic layers graphite sample of solutions of metal salts (Li, Al, Fe, Cu) in organic solvents (propylene carbonate, -dimethylformamide, dimethyl sulfoxide). Ions and organic solvent molecules expand the space between the atomic layers, which makes it possible to separate them when exposed to an external driving force, which can be of an electrochemical, thermal, microwave, solvothermal, acoustochemical, or acoustic nature.

 The disadvantage of this method is low productivity due to the long duration of the stages of its implementation (expansion of graphite, treatment with an external driving force, purification of the obtained graphene). In addition, complete purification of graphene from organic solvents is not achievable.

 There is also known a method for the production of graphene using electromagnetic radiation (see patent US 20130056346 A1, IPC C01B 31/02, B01J 19/12, B82Y 40/00, publ .: 07.03.2013). This method involves the transformation of graphite oxide into graphene when it is heated under the action of concentrated electromagnetic radiation (including laser radiation).

 The disadvantage of this method is that the starting material for the production of graphene is a specially prepared microdispersed graphite oxide powder, the production of which is associated with complex chemical and mechanical processes and the use of environmentally hazardous reagents.

 A known method for the production of carbon nanostructures in cryogenic liquids (see Mortazavi S. method of producing graphene, patent No. 2572325., P. Parvin, Reyhani A. Fabrication of graphene based on Q-switched Nd: YAG laser ablation of graphite target in liquid nitrogen. Laser Physics Review Letters, 2012, Vol. 9, No. 7, P. 547-552 (prototype)), in which graphene is produced by laser ablation of a graphite target placed in liquid nitrogen using a pulsed nanosecond Q-switched Nd: YAG laser.

 The disadvantages of this method include the fact that it takes a long time (20 minutes) to obtain graphene, and the target surface is treated with a stationary laser beam, which limits the synthesis area by the boundaries of the radiation focusing spot. The combination of these disadvantages reduces the performance of the method under consideration.

 The technical result of the proposed invention is to increase the productivity of the graphene production process in one processing cycle without the use of chemicals that require additional purification of the obtained material.

 The technical result is achieved by the fact that in the method of producing graphene, the process is carried out in liquid nitrogen using pulsed laser radiation, and the processing of the graphite surface is carried out with a laser beam with a pulse duration of about 10-13 s, moving along the target surface at a speed providing 75% spot overlap exposure to laser pulses.

 FIG. 1 shows an image of graphene structures obtained using the invention by laser peeling of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). FIG. 2 shows an image of graphene structures obtained using the invention by laser exfoliation of glassy carbon. Images were obtained using a Quanta 200 3D scanning electron microscope.

 The method is implemented using a TETA-10 ytterbium femtosecond laser. This laser provides processing of materials with radiation with a wavelength of 1029 nm, a pulse duration of 300 fs and an energy per pulse of 150 mJ. The repetition rate of laser pulses is 10 kHz. The surface of graphite is processed in liquid nitrogen, which covers it with a layer about 1 cm thick. The diameter of the laser radiation spot on the graphite surface is 100 µm.

 When testing the method, the following graphite modifications were used as a starting material (target material) to obtain graphene: highly oriented pyrolytic graphite VOPG-1.7-10 × 10 × 1-1 and glassy carbon SU-2000.

 The surface of the initial material is processed in the scanning mode. The speed of the laser beam on the target surface is 0.25 m / s. At such a scanning speed, 75% overlap of the spots of the action of laser pulses is provided, which corresponds to the processing of each surface element within the laser track with four radiation pulses (with the exception of the initial and final stages of the laser track). At a lower degree of exposure, no exfoliation of graphene occurs, and at a higher one, a strong destruction of the target surface and, at the same time, of the peeled carbon material begins. The amount of obtained graphene material increases in proportion to the surface area of ​​the laser-treated graphite target. An increase in the processing area is provided by multipass irradiation of the graphite surface with a distance between the center lines of the laser tracks of 100 μm, which makes it possible to avoid their overlap and destruction of exfoliated graphene structures.


 As a result of the implementation of the method, graphene with a thickness of about 10 nm is exfoliated from the surface of the graphite target. In the case of using HOPG as a starting material, graphene is obtained in the form of ribbons with a width of up to 50 μm and a length of more than 150 μm and plates of arbitrary shape with a characteristic size of up to 150 μm. When glassy carbon is used as a starting material, graphene is obtained in the form of lumps with a highly developed free surface and a characteristic size of about 1 μm.


 After the completion of the production process, the graphene material is kept under natural conditions until the complete evaporation of liquid nitrogen, after which it becomes available for subsequent research and use.


 Thus, the proposed method will make it possible to obtain graphene structures of various shapes and sizes with the provision of high productivity and environmental friendliness of the production process.

From its prototype containing fluorescent quantum dots and recognizing molecules on its surface, developed at the LNVI earlier, the new invention is distinguished by the introduction of additional layers containing magnetic nanoparticles on the surface of microspheres, which makes it possible to separate microspheres in a magnetic field and obtain purified analytes, as well as layers of amphoteric polyelectrolytes that provide the possibility of stimulus-sensitive destruction of microspheres after separation. The new diagnostic tool allows not only to identify markers of diseases or pathogens using the method of flow cytometry, but also to conduct a more detailed study of them by methods that require obtaining analytes in pure form. In addition to improving the quality of differential diagnostics, this will reduce the cost of analysis by eliminating expensive equipment.

The effectiveness of the new differential diagnostic tool is demonstrated by the example of detection of markers of the human immunodeficiency virus and markers of tuberculosis in a sample of biological fluid.

The introduction of this invention into practice opens up the possibility of choosing treatment by methods of personalized medicine based on molecular analysis of the characteristics of the disease and the selection of the most effective therapy.
