The study involved children aged 12-17 years from January to mid-June 2021 in the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). The study has not yet passed peer review.
The researchers found 257 cases of "cardiac adverse events" (CAEs). All but one received the Pfizer vaccine, the only one approved for children at the time of the study.
CAEs were identified as: myocarditis, pericarditis, and myopericarditis, or "chest pain" combined with signs of elevated troponin levels or abnormal ECG, abnormal echocardiogram, or MRI of the heart.
The study found a heart rate of side effects with one CAE for every 6172 doses given to boys aged 12-15 years and one CAE for every 10,638 doses administered to boys aged 16-17 years. This compares with the published possible scenario of the Food and Drug Administration in August, which estimated "an excess risk approaching one case of myocarditis/pericarditis among every 5,000 doses administered."
