I know, I know, it’s tough to find the right lounge chair. From the front or back, the Afteroom Lounge Chair may not look like anything special, but turn it slightly to the side and you’ll see the exaggerated arms swoop forward for an imposing silhouette. Afteroom’s Hung-Ming Chen and Chen-Yen Wei took inspiration from Thonet’s Bentwood Chair and Børge Mogensen’s Spanish Lounge, merging curves in powder-coated steel with low proportions and leather to make an interesting seating option for any lounge. If you think you know how to be lazy and while (or, wile, if you prefer) away the hours, you are in for a big surprise, because Muji’s Body Fit Cushion is now available in the US, and it’s going to test your limits. Just how long can you sit and read a book? How long can you nap? What about meditating staring out the window? I bet you can double that time, easy, when you’re sitting upon this bulbous mound. Muji doesn’t exactly declare what’s inside of the cushion, but that’s okay as I’d rather not know and pretend it has something to do with high tech science or magic (or both). Written by Katie on April 20, 2015. Chances are that you don’t recognize this chair right away, and that’s probably because it’s not made by a famous designer or manufacturer*. Instead, it’s from Slowood Studios and Hawkins New York. Slowood Studios is owned and operated by Jules Anderson and she designs and fabricates most of her pieces, from welding to staining. In the case of the Anderson Sling Chair**, the welded iron frame makes a sculptural statement while the untanned natural leather will be easy on your backside after a long day’s work.

When Room&Board released their new Lars Lounge Chair, I thought that maybe I had seen it somewhere before. Of course, it borrows heavily from a handful of classic Mid-20th century designs, and, in this particular case, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. There’s lots of mid century lounge chairs that hit a pretty perfect note of top-notch design and comfort, and often you can find a pair for a decent price (i.e. less than $1k) if you scour eBay and/or resale shops. There’s also a plethora of dodgy manufacturers that copy classic designs outright, and that’s not cool (or so most people think, myself included) because it’s pretty much stealing someone’s work. Whenever I see the Slow Chair by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec for Vitra, I am reminded of the Maison Flottante where the chair is shown prominently as the main living area seating. Would you believe that the inspiration behind the Slow Chair was ladies’ tights? I’m sure you can, as the strong, precisely shaped knit is stretched over the metal frame, quite similar to a fitted stocking.
