Porchfest Somerville Draws Thousands for a Day of Music and Community

Somerville, MA – May 10, 2025 – The streets of Somerville came alive this weekend as the annual Porchfest returned, transforming front porches into stages and neighborhoods into a sprawling music festival. Now in its 12th year, the free, grassroots event featured over 500 performances across the city, with musicians of all genres—from indie rock to jazz, folk to electronic—playing for crowds of enthusiastic locals and visitors.

A City-Wide Celebration

From noon until well into the evening, residents opened their porches, yards, and driveways to host bands, while attendees wandered from one performance to the next, maps in hand. Food trucks, pop-up art displays, and impromptu dance parties added to the festive atmosphere.

'This is what makes Somerville special,' said Mayor Katjana Ballantyne, who made stops at several performances. 'Porchfest isn’t just about music—it’s about neighbors coming together, discovering new artists, and celebrating our creative community.'

Highlights of the Day

The Funk Collective drew a massive crowd on Highland Avenue with their high-energy brass section.

Singer-songwriter Lila Cruz performed an intimate acoustic set on a quiet side street, drawing listeners who sat cross-legged on the sidewalk.

A group of teenage punk bands took over a Davis Square porch, with parents and kids alike nodding along to the raw energy.

A Growing Tradition

What started as a small DIY event in 2011 has now become one of Somerville’s most anticipated happenings, inspiring similar Porchfests in cities across the country. This year’s edition saw record attendance, with warm, sunny weather encouraging even more people to explore the city on foot or by bike.

'The best part is discovering a band you’ve never heard of and just falling in love with their sound,' said longtime attendee Marcus Rivera. 'It feels like the whole city is one big block party.'

With another successful Porchfest in the books, organizers are already looking ahead to next year—and residents are counting down the days until the porches come alive once again.
