Salma Hayek Launches New Initiative to Support Women in Film

Los Angeles, May 10, 2025 – Academy Award-nominated actress and producer Salma Hayek has announced the launch of 'Mujeres en Foco' (Women in Focus), a groundbreaking mentorship program aimed at supporting emerging female filmmakers from Latin America and beyond.

Hayek, known for her trailblazing work in Hollywood and advocacy for gender equality, revealed the initiative during a keynote speech at the Cannes Film Festival. The program will provide funding, resources, and industry access to women directing their first or second feature films, with a focus on diverse storytelling.

'I was once a young woman with big dreams but few opportunities,' Hayek shared. 'This is about opening doors so the next generation doesn’t have to fight as hard as we did.'

The initiative has already secured partnerships with major studios and streaming platforms, with Hayek personally contributing $2 million in seed funding. Early supporters include Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine and Ava DuVernay’s ARRAY.

Hayek, who recently wrapped production on 'The Cartel', an action thriller she stars in and produces, continues to champion underrepresented voices in entertainment. Mujeres en Foco will accept its first round of applications this fall.
