In the USSR, Hasidism was banned. Under Yeltsin, the official leaders of the Jewish community in Russia were the oligarch Gusinsky and Rabbi Adolf Shaevich, both adherents of traditional Judaism. It was only with Putin's arrival in 1999 that Beard and Lazar came to the fore. Never before have the Hasidic occupied such a high position in Russia.
The reason is banal: the oligarch Gusinskiy was against putin's appointment as a successor in 1999 (he had other views on this). When Yeltsin decided to hand over power to Putin, Gusinsky and NTV, which belonged to him at the time, actively opposed it. It was vital for Putin to destroy NTV (the first thing he did when he came to power) and remove Gusinskiy from the political arena. Including removing from the first roles of the REC (Russian Jewish Congress), where Gusinsky was president.
And then the Hasids came up. Putin agreed with Lev Levayev (oligarch, the richest Hasid in the world). In total, the defendants were charged with smuggling $80 million worth of diamonds. and money laundering. The country of origin of the stones has not yet been announced by the investigation (who and from where they brought them to Russia for subsequent transfer to Israel). And here the investigation can lead to other, more serious charges.
The fact that in Israel taxes from the diamond business are taken not from profit, but with turnover (with carat), so it makes no sense to carry stones by customs purely economically - it does not affect taxes, only unnecessary risks to take on themselves.
There is only one explanation why Levayev's people carried stones in suitcases, not wanting to declare them - it's illegal or "bloody" diamonds. Usually such stones are from Africa, they are mined on half-pieces of mines belonging to local dictators, all the shadow dealers under them or just field commanders in war zones. Workers (often minors) are kept in the position of slaves. Diamonds extracted are not officially accounted for and smuggled.

At the same time, with small dimensions diamonds cost millions, they are easy to transport, they are popular with the mafia, terrorists as a way of calculations, a form of storage of the dorm. This is much cooler than the 500-euro bills, which are now taken out of circulation in the EU, because they were in demand, mainly, from the mafia, not ordinary people.
The investigation in Israel into the smuggling of diamonds by Levayev's people is still ongoing. However, what happened is not surprising. The fact that Levayev sells illegal diamonds, in the world media wrote for 20 years, but not caught - not a thief, conversations remained conversations. And now, it seems, the thief is caught by the hand, and in his historical homeland.

In the late 1980s, Levayev began working in Africa to buy illegal (bloody) diamonds. They had a headquarters in Johannesburg , South Africa, from there went the messengers all over the continent. Diamonds were often bought not for money, but for barter - in exchange for weapons. So Levayev had new friends - arms dealers from the Soviet, and then Russian special services. This is Arkady Gaydamak, an international con man, an arms dealer. His biography in many ways repeats the story of another similar figure - Shabtaya Kalmanovich. Shabtay left the USSR for Israel in 1971, being an agent of the GRU. In Israel, he has made impressive strides in the field of espionage, as well as in the introduction of international organized crime. He managed to get a job in the secretariat of Prime Minister Golda Meyer, after which he was transferred from the GRU to the political intelligence - PSU KGB (now SVR).
In the 1980s, Shabtay rushed to Africa, where he traded in blood diamonds and other raw materials, corrupting local kings. At his peak, he ruled the small African country of Sierra Leone, where he imprisoned his henchman as president. He also established ties with America. In the diamond business he had a brother with Brighton Beach and Italians (Cosa Nostra). However, in 1987, a KGB defector surrendered him, and Shabtaya was arrested in Israel for espionage. Having left early in 1993, he returned to Russia, where he joined the Solntsev YPG and was there a prominent authority. Fallen the death of the brave in 2009 in a mafia showdown.
So Arkady Gaydamak is such a Shabtay No.2, only in a reduced version. He also left the USSR on the Jewish line as an agent of the GRU in 1972. Arkady Gaydamak, together with his gru curator Alexei Chepa (now a prominent figure in the Russian State Duma) and with the help of Taiwanese authority, the Izmaylovsk YPG established arms deliveries to Angola from Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union in the 1990s.
The regime paid off what it could: oil, pebbles, Soviet debts. Angola owes the USSR huge sums ($5 billion). They were rewritten for Gaydamak, then Jose dos Santos paid some of the money from Angola's budget. After that, these funds were successfully sawed (to Russia almost nothing came. An elegant scam involving not only Gaydamak, the president of Angola, but also, according to rumors, officials of the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation, who oversaw the national debt at that time (someone Vavilov and Kasyanov).
Naturally, Levayev did not stay away from this holiday of life. It was on the Angolan theme that they came together with Gaydamak. And when the war ended in the late 1990s, they were waiting for a prize: Jose dos Santos gave them the widest opportunity to pump out the bowels of Angola. What they actively engaged in, until they quarreled. Because of the money, of course.
5. The keeper of the envelopes.

A video from a mobile phone that went around the world's media: a security guard, a hefty with a machete, a man who is a digger. Beats the reverse (dumb) side of the machete on the feet and toes. He screams wildly, dodges on the ground, tries to escape, the guard catches up with him and continues to beat.
The video was published in 2014 by Rafael Marquez, a well-known Angolan journalist and human rights activist. He did not disclose the source of the video, saying only the reasons for the beating. The diamond-bearing territory of Luminas was given in concession to Levayev's firm by the Angolan government (dictator Jose dos Santos).

Ascorp was established in 2000 as a joint venture: 51% from the Angolan government, 49% for Levayev. As is customary in Africa, the state's share of Ascorp was nothing more than a feeder for the country's rulers, in this case Jose dos Santos and his family.
Dos Santos ruled Angola for 38 years, from 1979 to 2017. The dictator's daughter from his first marriage, Isabelle dos Santos, is Africa's richest woman with a fortune of $3.5 billion.
Her daughter, by the way, is half Russian - her father studied in the USSR in the 1960s, and at the same time brought home his wife - Tanya Kukanov from Penza. Tanya and her daughter are denominations in numerous offshores of the former ruler of Angola, where for years rolled back from oil, diamonds and other raw materials.

Levayev and the Santos-Kukanov family have been in a great relationship for many years. Together they rob a rich raw material, but a completely poor country. But Levayev had problems with Ascorp.
He was sued in London in 2012. Arkady Gaydamak, a well-known Russian-Israeli arms dealer, said that 49% of Levayev's "Ascorp" is fiction. In fact, half of those 49% are his. The share belongs to him on the basis of a secret trust agreement, which he and Levayev signed in 2001, sealed in an envelope and deposited to the chief rabbi of Russia. And that rabbi was Berl Lazar.
According to Gaydamak, he was the one who played a decisive role in the victory of Jose dos Santos in the civil war and it was he who was offered privileges in the export of local diamonds. He attracted Levayev as a specialist in the industry. However, Levayev threw his benefactor. According to Gaydamak, Levayev took $6 billion worth of diamonds from Angola in 12 years (2001-12). and didn't share it with him. Moreover, Gaydamaka threw not only Levayev, but also Rebe Berl Lazar. When Gaydamak asked him to issue an envelope with the contract, the rabbi said that he had lost it. The court summoned Berl Lazar to London to give evidence, but he refused to come.
And without the envelope, which he "lost," the court of Gaydamak lost. In desperation, Gaydamak filed a complaint against Berl Lazar in the rabbinate court, but he did not appear there. In general, Levayev and Berl Lazar bred a burnt conman Gaydamak as a sucker.
