Many sectional garage doors have a lock-catch mechanism, also known as a lock latch, that operates using a T-handle. If turning the handle doesn't disengage or engage the catches, a simple step-by-step procedure may take care of the problem. In most cases, a homeowner can fix an overhead garage door lock catch in a relatively short time, using everyday hand tools Close the garage door. Working inside the garage, clear away all items, as necessary, for convenient access to the T-handle, the cables and the latch mechanisms on each of the outer sides of the door. Check the cable-stay brackets where the ends of the cables attach at each latch mechanism and the bar lever on the handle.

Tighten any loose nuts on the brackets, using a nut driver. Fit the provided extension tube onto the nozzle on a can of spray lubricant. Spray lubricant into the openings and seams on each of the latch mechanisms at the outer sides of the door. Turn the T-handle each way to engage and disengage the catches at the steel strike plates on each side of the door opening. Proceed to the next step if the handle doesn't operate as it should. Loosen the machine screws on the handle base plate, using the appropriate screwdriver. Pull the handle away from the face of the door and spray a generous amount of lubricant on the inner mechanism. Fit the handle into place and tighten the screws. Turn the handle as before. Proceed to the next step if the lock catch doesn't latch as it should. Fit locking pliers securely onto the outer end of one of the cables. Grip the handle of the pliers, pull the cable toward the T-handle and release tension on the cable. Repeat this at the other cable. If a cable doesn't return to its original position, the corresponding spring-loaded latch mechanism is faulty and needs to be replaced.
