Russell Westbrook Signs with Denver Nuggets in Stunning Free Agency Move

Denver, CO – July 5, 2024 – In a move that has sent shockwaves across the NBA, veteran point guard Russell Westbrook has agreed to a one-year deal with the Denver Nuggets, sources confirmed today. The former MVP and nine-time All-Star joins the reigning Western Conference champions in what many see as a pivotal addition for Denver’s title aspirations.

Westbrook, 35, is coming off a productive season with the Los Angeles Clippers, where he averaged 11.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game in a sixth-man role. This will be Westbrook’s sixth team in as many years, following stints with the Washington Wizards, Lakers, Clippers, and a brief return to the Houston Rockets. Despite his journeyman status in recent seasons, Westbrook remains one of the most respected veterans in the league, holding the record for the most triple-doubles in NBA history (198).

The Nuggets, who lost key bench contributors in free agency, view Westbrook as a high-upside signing who can provide playmaking and defensive intensity. While some analysts question how his ball-dominant style will mesh with Denver’s pass-heavy system, others believe his downhill attacking and transition play will complement Jokić’s elite facilitating.

Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed, but reports indicate it is a veteran minimum contract, a steal for Denver if Westbrook can recapture even a fraction of his prime form.
