Sheffield, UK – Sheffield Steelers defenseman Matt Petgrave has become the focus of intense scrutiny following a tragic on-ice collision during an Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) game against the Nottingham Panthers on Saturday. The incident resulted in the death of Panthers player Adam Johnson, who suffered a fatal neck injury after an apparent skate cut.

The 31-year-old Petgrave, a Canadian-born player with extensive experience in North American and European leagues, was involved in a mid-ice play that led to Johnson falling to the ice after contact. Video footage shows Petgrave’s leg rising, with his skate inadvertently striking Johnson in the neck. Emergency medical treatment was administered, but Johnson later died in a local hospital.
