NASCAR News: Rising Star Jake 'Lightning' McCoy Stuns Fans with Underdog Victory at Talladega

Talladega, Alabama – April 28, 2025 – In one of the most thrilling finishes in recent NASCAR history, 22-year-old rookie Jake 'Lightning' McCoy pulled off a stunning last-lap pass to win the Geico 500 at Talladega Superspeedway, leaving fans and analysts in awe.

Underdog Triumph

McCoy, driving the No. 47 Thunderbolt Motors Chevrolet, was a 100-1 longshot heading into the race. With just two top-10 finishes in his young Cup Series career, few expected him to contend—let alone win—against powerhouse teams like Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing.

But in true Talladega fashion, where anything can happen, McCoy avoided multiple wrecks in the final 20 laps, including 'The Big One' that took out defending champion Kyle Larson and fan favorite Chase Elliott.

The Final Lap Showdown

On the last lap, McCoy found himself in fifth place behind a freight train of veterans: Denny Hamlin, Ryan Blaney, Bubba Wallace, and Ross Chastain. As the leaders fanned out three-wide, McCoy stayed patient, tucking in behind Hamlin on the high line.

Coming off Turn 4, Blaney and Wallace made contact, sending Wallace sideways. McCoy seized the moment, darting to the inside with a perfectly timed slingshot. He crossed the finish line just 0.008 seconds ahead of Hamlin—the closest finish at Talladega since Ricky Craven edged Kurt Busch in 2003.

Emotional Victory Lane

'This is unreal,' McCoy said, fighting back tears in Victory Lane. 'I grew up watching races here, dreaming of this moment. To actually do it—man, I don’t even have words.'

Team owner Marty Grayson, a former crew chief who started Thunderbolt Motors just three years ago, was equally stunned. 'We’re a small team, but Jake’s got something special. Today proved it.'

What’s Next?

The win locks McCoy into the 2025 NASCAR Playoffs, making him the first rookie since Justin Haley (2019) to win a superspeedway race. Analysts are already calling him the next big thing in NASCAR.

Meanwhile, controversy brews as Hamlin hinted at possible blocking violations in post-race interviews, but NASCAR officials confirmed the finish stands after review.

The Cup Series heads next to Dover’s 'Monster Mile,' where McCoy will look to keep his Cinderella season alive.
