Lapu-Lapu Day Celebration Turns Tragic as Stampede Claims Lives

*Lapu-Lapu City, Philippines – April 27, 2025*

What was meant to be a day of pride and celebration in honor of the legendary Filipino hero Lapu-Lapu turned into a tragedy as a deadly stampede occurred during the city’s annual festivities, leaving at least 12 dead and dozens injured.

The incident took place during the grand reenactment of the Battle of Mactan at the Liberty Shrine, where thousands had gathered to witness the event. Witnesses reported that panic erupted when a section of the viewing stands collapsed, causing a sudden rush of people trying to escape.

Local authorities confirmed that among the victims were children and elderly attendees who were unable to move quickly amid the chaos. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, transporting the injured to nearby hospitals, where some remain in critical condition.

Mayor Junard Chan expressed deep sorrow over the incident, declaring a three-day period of mourning and promising a full investigation. 'This is a heartbreaking tragedy on a day meant to celebrate our heroism. We will ensure accountability and improve safety measures to prevent such disasters in the future,' he said in a press conference.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. also extended his condolences, calling for a review of safety protocols in large public events nationwide.

As the city grieves, questions arise about crowd control measures and whether proper precautions were in place. Lapu-Lapu Day, celebrated every April 27, marks the victory of the native chieftain Lapu-Lapu over Spanish forces led by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521—a symbol of Filipino resistance. This year, however, the day will be remembered for an entirely different reason.

Investigations are ongoing, and officials urge witnesses to come forward with any information that could help determine the cause of the stampede.
