Lapu-Lapu Day Celebration Turns Tragic as Stampede Claims Multiple Lives

*Lapu-Lapu City, Philippines – April 27, 2025* – What was meant to be a joyous celebration of Lapu-Lapu Day turned into a nightmare as a deadly stampede occurred during a crowded reenactment event, leaving at least 12 dead and dozens injured.

The tragedy unfolded around noon at the Liberty Shrine in Mactan, where thousands had gathered to witness a historical reenactment of the 1521 Battle of Mactan, commemorating the victory of Datu Lapu-Lapu and his warriors against Spanish forces led by Ferdinand Magellan.

Chaos Amid Celebrations

Witnesses reported that panic erupted when a section of the viewing stands collapsed, triggering a mass rush for safety. The sheer volume of spectators—estimated at over 20,000—overwhelmed security personnel, leading to a deadly crush.

'People were screaming, children were crying—it was complete chaos,' said Maria Santos, a local vendor who narrowly escaped the stampede. 'One moment we were watching the performance, the next, everyone was running in different directions.'

Emergency Response and Casualties

Emergency services rushed to the scene, transporting the injured to nearby hospitals, including Lapu-Lapu City District Hospital and Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center. Authorities confirmed that among the dead were three children and several elderly attendees. Over 50 others sustained injuries, with some in critical condition.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard Chan declared a city-wide day of mourning and ordered an immediate investigation into the incident. 'We are heartbroken by this tragedy on a day meant to honor our hero, Lapu-Lapu,' Chan said in a press conference. 'We will ensure accountability and review safety protocols for future events.'

Calls for Improved Safety Measures

The incident has sparked outrage among residents, with many questioning the lack of proper crowd control measures. Senator Risa Hontiveros called for stricter enforcement of public event regulations, stating, 'This was a preventable disaster. We must prioritize the safety of our people in all public gatherings.'

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. expressed his condolences and assured government support for the victims’ families. 'Our thoughts are with the bereaved families. Assistance will be provided to those affected,' he said in a statement.
