Illinois State University Lockdown Lifted After Reported Shooting; One Injured

Normal, IL — April 28, 2025

Illinois State University (ISU) was placed on lockdown Monday morning following reports of an on-campus shooting near Watterson Towers, a student residence hall. Authorities confirmed one person was injured and transported to a local hospital, though their condition remains unknown.

Police Respond to Active Shooter Alert

The ISU Police Department issued an emergency alert just after 10:30 a.m., urging students and staff to 'shelter in place' as officers responded to reports of gunfire. Multiple law enforcement agencies, including Normal Police and McLean County Sheriff’s deputies, swarmed the scene.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as students fled the area or barricaded themselves in dorm rooms and classrooms. 'We heard shouting, then two loud pops. Everyone started running,' said sophomore Emily Carter, who was nearby when the incident occurred.

Suspect in Custody, No Ongoing Threat

By noon, police announced that a suspect had been taken into custody without further violence. While officials have not released the shooter’s identity or motive, they confirmed the situation was contained and lifted the lockdown shortly after.

ISU President Terri Goss Kinzy addressed the incident in a statement, praising the rapid police response and urging the campus community to utilize counseling services. 'Our hearts are with the victim and their family. We will provide updates as more information becomes available,' she said.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities have not confirmed whether the shooting was targeted or random. The McLean County State’s Attorney’s Office is expected to file charges soon.

This marks the first major shooting incident at ISU in recent years, reigniting debates over campus safety and gun violence in Illinois.
