Local Band Sparks Ohio Sing-Along Craze

Local Band's Rendition of 'Hang On Sloopy' Sparks Citywide Sing-Along at Annual Festival

Columbus, OH — October 8, 2024

A spirited performance of the classic hit 'Hang On Sloopy' turned into an unforgettable moment at this year’s Ohio Music Festival, as thousands of attendees joined in a massive sing-along that echoed through downtown Columbus.

The iconic 1965 song, famously adopted as Ohio’s official rock song in 1985, was performed by local band The McCoys Revival, a tribute group honoring the original artists. Midway through their set, lead singer Jake Thompson encouraged the crowd to belt out the legendary chorus—and they didn’t hold back.

'Seeing everyone, from little kids to grandparents, shouting 'Hang on, Sloopy, Sloopy, hang on!' gave me chills,' said Thompson after the show. 'That song just brings people together like nothing else.'

The impromptu moment even caught the attention of Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, who was in attendance. 'It’s moments like these that remind us why 'Hang On Sloopy' is more than just a song—it’s a piece of Ohio’s heart,' he told reporters.

The festival, already a beloved annual event, gained extra buzz on social media as clips of the sing-along went viral. Many fans are now calling for The McCoys Revival to perform the track at next year’s Ohio State football game, where 'Hang On Sloopy' is a staple during halftime.

As the night wrapped up, Thompson left the crowd with a promise: 'We’ll keep playing it as long as you keep singing it!'

For now, it seems, Sloopy’s grip on Ohio is as strong as ever.
