KCCI Weather Team Saves Local Fair from Severe Storm Chaos

Des Moines, IA – June 12, 2024 – The KCCI 8 News weather team is being hailed as heroes after their timely warnings helped evacuate the Iowa State Fairgrounds just minutes before a severe thunderstorm unleashed chaos Tuesday evening.

Chief Meteorologist John McLaughlin and the KCCI Storm Team tracked a rapidly developing storm system, issuing urgent alerts as radar indicated 70 mph winds and baseball-sized hail moving toward the fairgrounds, where thousands had gathered for an outdoor concert.

'We saw rotation forming southwest of Des Moines, and the storm was moving fast,' said McLaughlin. 'We immediately broke into programming and urged people to seek shelter.'

Fair organizers, monitoring KCCI’s live coverage, initiated emergency protocols, directing attendees to sturdy buildings. Minutes later, the storm ripped through, toppling food stands and flipping carnival tents. Thanks to the early warning, no serious injuries were reported.

'KCCI’s accuracy gave us the time we needed,' said fair coordinator Lisa Hammond. 'They saved lives tonight.'

The station’s Interactive Radar and Weather Alert Day coverage are credited with keeping central Iowans informed as the storm caused widespread power outages and tree damage.
