Pittsburgh Penguins Head Coach Mike Sullivan Signs Contract Extension Amidst Team Rebuild

Pittsburgh, PA — June 10, 2024

The Pittsburgh Penguins announced today that head coach Mike Sullivan has agreed to a multi-year contract extension, solidifying his future with the franchise as they navigate a pivotal offseason.

Sullivan, 56, has been behind the bench for the Penguins since December 2015, leading the team to back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2016 and 2017. Despite recent playoff struggles, including missing the postseason the past two years, Penguins management expressed strong confidence in Sullivan’s leadership.

'Mike is one of the best coaches in the NHL, and we believe he is the right person to guide this team through our next phase,' said General Manager Kyle Dubas. 'His ability to develop players and adapt to the evolving game is unmatched.'

The extension comes amid speculation about the futures of veteran stars Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang, all of whom are entering the latter stages of their careers. Sullivan’s task will be to balance a potential retooling of the roster while keeping the Penguins competitive.

'I'm grateful for the opportunity to continue coaching this storied franchise,' Sullivan said in a statement. 'We have a passionate fan base and a group of players who are committed to winning. I’m excited for the challenge ahead.'

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but sources indicate it is a three-year extension, keeping Sullivan in Pittsburgh through at least the 2026-27 season.

As the Penguins prepare for the NHL Draft and free agency, Sullivan’s presence ensures stability behind the bench—a key factor as the organization looks to return to championship contention.
