Local Hero Josh Sullivan Saves Stranded Hikers in Dramatic Mountain Rescue

Asheville, NC – In a heart-pounding rescue mission yesterday, local outdoorsman and volunteer firefighter Josh Sullivan braved treacherous conditions to save three hikers stranded on Mount Mitchell.

The hikers, a family from Charlotte, had ventured off-trail near the summit when sudden fog and dropping temperatures left them disoriented. After hours of failed attempts to call for help, their cell phones finally connected to emergency services just before nightfall.

Josh Sullivan, a seasoned mountaineer and member of the Buncombe County Search and Rescue Team, was among the first responders. Despite high winds and near-freezing rain, Sullivan navigated the rugged terrain on foot, locating the family just before midnight.

'They were cold, exhausted, and one had a minor ankle injury, but they were alive,' Sullivan said. 'I’ve hiked these trails my whole life—I knew we had to get to them fast.'

Using a combination of rope systems and a makeshift stretcher, Sullivan and his team safely guided the hikers down to a waiting medical team. All three were treated for mild hypothermia and released.

'Josh is a hero,' said Sheriff Daniel Reeves. 'His quick thinking and knowledge of the mountain made all the difference.'

When asked about his actions, Sullivan shrugged off the praise. 'Just doing my job. I’m just glad they’re safe.'

The incident has sparked renewed calls for improved trail signage and emergency beacons in the area. Meanwhile, the rescued family says they plan to thank Sullivan in person—once they’ve warmed up.
