Ben Simmons Shut Down for the Season Amid Ongoing Back Issues

BROOKLYN, NY – Brooklyn Nets guard Ben Simmons will miss the remainder of the 2024-25 NBA season as he continues to recover from a lingering back injury, the team announced Saturday.

Simmons, 28, has played in just 15 games this season, averaging 6.1 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 5.7 assists per game. Despite showing flashes of his elite playmaking and defensive ability, the former No. 1 overall pick has struggled with persistent nerve irritation in his lower back, limiting his availability.

'After consulting with our medical staff and specialists, we’ve decided that the best course of action is for Ben to focus on rehab and recovery for the remainder of the season,' Nets General Manager Sean Marks said in a statement. 'Our priority is his long-term health, and we believe this decision gives him the best chance to return to full strength.'

Simmons’ career has been plagued by injuries since his trade from the Philadelphia 76ers in 2022. Once considered a franchise cornerstone, the three-time All-Star has faced criticism for his reluctance to shoot and extended absences. However, teammates and coaches have consistently praised his leadership and defensive impact when healthy.

'It’s frustrating, but I’m committed to getting right,' Simmons said in a brief statement. 'I appreciate the support from the organization and fans, and I’ll be working hard to come back stronger.'

With the Nets (32-50) eliminated from playoff contention, the team will focus on developing younger players while Simmons prepares for a critical offseason. His future in Brooklyn remains uncertain, as he enters the final year of his max contract in 2025-26.

NBA analysts speculate whether Simmons can ever regain his All-NBA form, but for now, the focus is on his recovery—and whether he can finally put his injury woes behind him.
