Ben Simmons’ Future in Question After Another Season Derailed by Injuries

Brooklyn, NY – Ben Simmons’ once-promising NBA career faces renewed uncertainty after the Brooklyn Nets announced that the 28-year-old guard/forward would miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season due to ongoing back issues. Since being traded to the Nets in 2022 as part of the blockbuster James Harden deal, Simmons has struggled with physical and mental health challenges. After sitting out the entire 2021-22 season due to a holdout and back problems, he played just 42 games in 2022-23 before nerve impingement in his spine cut his season short. Another back procedure followed in 2023, and though he returned briefly this season, he appeared in only 15 games, averaging career lows in points (6.1), rebounds (7.3), and assists (5.8).

'It’s frustrating for everyone involved,' Nets head coach Jordi Fernández said in a press conference. 'Ben has worked hard, but his body hasn’t cooperated. Our focus now is getting him fully healthy.'

Financial and Roster Implications

Simmons is owed $40.3 million in the final year of his contract next season, making him one of the league’s highest-paid players despite his limited contributions. The Nets, who missed the playoffs this year, face tough decisions about whether to keep him, seek a trade, or negotiate a buyout.

'At this point, it’s hard to see a team taking on his salary without major draft compensation attached,' ESPN analyst Bobby Marks noted. 'Brooklyn might have to wait and hope he regains some value before the trade deadline next season.'

Once considered a franchise cornerstone after being drafted No. 1 overall in 2016, Simmons’ decline has been stark. His reluctance to shoot from outside, combined with recurring injuries, has left many wondering if he can ever regain his Defensive Player of the Year-caliber form.

Teammates have publicly supported him, with Mikal Bridges telling reporters, 'Ben’s a great player when he’s right. We just want him healthy.' However, patience is wearing thin among fans, and some analysts suggest his career may be at a crossroads.

As the Nets shift toward rebuilding, Simmons’ future remains one of the biggest question marks heading into the offseason. Whether he can overcome his physical struggles or if his contract will become one of the league’s worst remains to be seen.
