The Phantom of the Estadio Gran Canaria: A True Crime Mystery in Spanish Football

Las Palmas, Spain – May 1988

The final matchday of the 1987-88 La Liga season was supposed to be a celebration for UD Las Palmas. Instead, it became the center of one of Spanish football’s most enduring mysteries—a match shrouded in whispers of corruption, phantom goals, and a disappearance that remains unsolved to this day.

The Stakes

Atlético Madrid, one of Spain’s biggest clubs, was fighting for survival. Sitting just above the relegation zone, they needed at least a draw against mid-table Las Palmas to ensure safety. Meanwhile, Las Palmas had little to play for—no European spots, no threat of the drop.

Yet, something felt off from the start.

The Phantom Goal

In the 22nd minute, Las Palmas striker Juanito González broke through Atlético’s defense and unleashed a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar—or did it?

Eyewitnesses swore the ball crossed the line. The linesman raised his flag. But the referee, José Donato Pes Pérez, waved play on. No goal.

Atlético survived—and then, in the 67th minute, striker Paulo Futre scored the winner. The Madrid club stayed up. Las Palmas fans erupted in fury.

The Disappearance of Juanito González

Three days after the match, Juanito González—the man whose 'ghost goal' was denied—vanished.

His car was found abandoned near the Las Palmas port. His wallet, keys, and passport were still inside. There were no signs of a struggle.
