Amateur Golfer Nick Dunlap Makes History with PGA Tour Victory

Orlando, FL — January 21, 2024 — In a stunning turn of events, 20-year-old amateur golfer Nick Dunlap defied the odds and secured a historic victory at The American Express PGA Tour event, becoming the first amateur to win on the Tour since Phil Mickelson in 1991.

Dunlap, a sophomore at the University of Alabama and the reigning U.S. Amateur champion, entered the final round with a three-shot lead but faced fierce competition from seasoned professionals, including World No. 6 Xander Schauffele and former major champion Justin Thomas. Despite the pressure, Dunlap displayed remarkable composure, sinking a clutch six-foot par putt on the 18th hole to seal his victory with a 29-under-par total.

'I'm still in shock,' Dunlap said afterward, fighting back tears. 'To even have the opportunity to play out here is a dream, but to win is something I never thought possible.'

Because Dunlap is an amateur, he does not receive the $1.5 million winner’s prize, which instead goes to runner-up Christiaan Bezuidenhout. However, the victory grants him a two-year PGA Tour exemption, meaning he now faces a life-changing decision: remain in college or turn professional immediately.

'This changes everything,' said Alabama golf coach Jay Seawell. 'Nick has the talent to compete at the highest level, and now he has the opportunity.'

Dunlap’s win has drawn comparisons to Tiger Woods’ early career and has sparked excitement about the future of American golf. Social media erupted with congratulations from fellow players, including Mickelson, who tweeted: 'Welcome to the club, Nick! Amateur wins are rare for a reason—what a performance!'

As Dunlap weighs his next move, one thing is certain: a new star has arrived on the PGA Tour.
