Justin Thomas and Longtime Caddie Jim 'Bones' Mackay Part Ways After Five Successful Seasons

In a surprising move, PGA Tour star Justin Thomas and his caddie, Jim 'Bones' Mackay, have ended their professional relationship after five years together. The split, confirmed by both parties, comes just weeks before the 2025 PGA Championship, where Thomas will look to secure his third Wanamaker Trophy.

Mackay, a legendary caddie best known for his 25-year partnership with Phil Mickelson, joined Thomas in 2020 following a brief stint as an on-course reporter for NBC. Their collaboration yielded six PGA Tour victories, including Thomas’s second PGA Championship in 2022.

'Bones has been an incredible part of my team, and I’m so grateful for everything he’s done to help me succeed,' Thomas said in a statement. 'This was a mutual decision, and I’ll always appreciate his knowledge, friendship, and dedication.'

Mackay, 59, hinted at scaling back his schedule but did not rule out future opportunities. 'Working with Justin has been a highlight of my career,' he said. 'I’ll take some time to consider what’s next, whether that’s caddying, broadcasting, or something else.'

Speculation is already swirling about Thomas’s next caddie, with names like Paul Tesori (formerly Webb Simpson’s looper) and veteran caddie John Wood in the mix. Thomas is expected to have a temporary bagman for next week’s Wells Fargo Championship before making a permanent hire.

The split marks the end of one of golf’s most successful player-caddie duos in recent years. Fans will be watching closely to see how Thomas adjusts as he gears up for a critical stretch of the season.
