U.S. Citizen Wrongfully Detained and Deported to Honduras in Shocking Immigration Error

Los Angeles, CA – April 28, 2025 – In a startling case of mistaken identity, a U.S. citizen was wrongfully detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and deported to Honduras, despite repeatedly asserting his American citizenship, officials confirmed today.

The man, identified as 32-year-old Francisco Galván, was born in Los Angeles but detained last month during a routine traffic stop in Texas after a database error flagged him as an undocumented immigrant. Despite providing his U.S. passport and California driver’s license, Galván was held in an ICE detention center for weeks before being forcibly removed to Honduras, a country he had never visited.

A Case of Mistaken Identity

Galván’s family claims he was confused with a Honduran national with a similar name who had an outstanding deportation order. His attorney, María López, called the deportation 'an outrageous violation of due process.'

'How does a U.S. citizen get deported without proper verification?' López demanded. 'This is a catastrophic failure of the system.'

ICE Admits Error, Promises Investigation

After Galván managed to contact the U.S. Embassy in Tegucigalpa, ICE acknowledged the mistake and facilitated his return to the U.S. late last week. In a statement, the agency said it was 'reviewing procedures to prevent such incidents in the future.'

This is not the first time a U.S. citizen has been wrongfully deported. A 2022 report by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) documented at least 70 such cases in the past decade, often involving individuals of Latino descent.

Family Seeks Accountability

Galván, now back in California, described his ordeal as a 'nightmare.' His family is considering legal action against the federal government.

'This should never happen to anyone,' Galván said. 'I kept telling them I was American, but no one listened.'

The incident has reignited debates over ICE’s enforcement practices and the risks of wrongful deportations amid heightened immigration scrutiny. Advocates are calling for stricter safeguards to prevent similar cases.
