U.S. Citizen Wrongfully Detained and Deported to Honduras in Shocking Immigration Mix-Up

Los Angeles, CA – May 28, 2024 – In a startling case of mistaken identity, a U.S. citizen was reportedly detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and deported to Honduras, despite having legal status in the United States. The incident has sparked outrage and renewed scrutiny over immigration enforcement practices.

Wrongful Detention

Francisco Galván, a 38-year-old construction worker and longtime Los Angeles resident, was arrested during a routine traffic stop last month due to an outstanding warrant—later revealed to be a case of mistaken identity. Despite providing his U.S. passport and birth certificate, Galván was transferred to ICE custody after local authorities allegedly failed to verify his citizenship.

Galván, who was born in Los Angeles to Honduran parents, claims he repeatedly told officials he was an American citizen but was ignored. Within days, he was flown to Honduras, a country he had never visited before.

Stranded Without Support

'I kept telling them, ‘I’m a U.S. citizen, check your records,’ but they didn’t listen,' Galván said in a phone interview from Tegucigalpa, where he has been stranded for three weeks. 'I don’t know anyone here. I don’t even speak Spanish well.'

His family, desperate for answers, contacted the nonprofit Civil Rights Outreach Group (CROG), which filed an emergency motion demanding his return.

ICE Admits Error

After media inquiries, ICE released a statement acknowledging 'an apparent mistake' in Galván’s deportation and said they were 'working to rectify the situation.' However, the agency did not explain how a citizen was wrongfully removed from the country.

This is not the first such incident. A 2020 report by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) documented at least 70 cases of U.S. citizens being detained or nearly deported by ICE since 2012.

Family Demands Accountability

Galván’s sister, Maribel, called the ordeal a 'nightmare' and demanded accountability. 'How can this happen in America? They took my brother like he was nothing,' she said.

Legal experts say the case highlights systemic flaws in immigration enforcement. 'This is a clear violation of due process,' said attorney Rebecca Cortez of CROG. 'When agencies don’t follow their own protocols, citizens end up paying the price.'

What’s Next?

As of today, the U.S. Embassy in Honduras is reviewing Galván’s case to facilitate his return. Meanwhile, advocates are calling for congressional hearings to prevent future wrongful deportations.

For now, Galván waits in limbo, hoping to return to the only home he’s ever known.
