Tulsi Gabbard Leaves Democratic Party, Citing 'Elitist Cabal' and 'Anti-Hindu Bias'

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Former U.S. Representative and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard announced Tuesday that she is leaving the Democratic Party, accusing its leadership of being controlled by an 'elitist cabal' and promoting divisive policies.

In a video posted on social media, Gabbard, a four-term congresswoman from Hawaii and the first Hindu member of Congress, criticized the party for what she called its hostility toward religious freedom and its 'anti-Hindu bigotry.'

'The Democratic Party is under the complete control of an elitist cabal of warmongers who divide us by racializing every issue,' Gabbard said. She specifically called out what she described as the party's dismissal of Hindu Americans, pointing to instances where Democratic leaders allegedly ignored or misrepresented Hindu concerns.

Gabbard, an Iraq War veteran and a major in the Army National Guard, gained national attention during her 2020 presidential run for her anti-interventionist foreign policy views and her willingness to challenge establishment Democrats. However, her ties to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and her past opposition to LGBTQ rights drew criticism from progressive activists.

Since ending her presidential campaign, Gabbard has increasingly aligned herself with conservative media, appearing frequently on Fox News and criticizing President Joe Biden's policies. Her departure from the Democratic Party has fueled speculation that she may seek office as an independent or even join the Republican Party.

Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison responded to Gabbard's announcement, saying, 'The Democratic Party is a big tent, but it’s clear Tulsi has chosen a different path.' Meanwhile, some Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, praised her decision, with Trump calling her 'brave' for speaking out.

Gabbard did not announce her next political move but vowed to continue fighting for 'freedom, aloha, and the Constitution.' Her departure marks another twist in the career of a politician who has long defied easy categorization.
