Tufts University Student Detained in Connection with Cybersecurity Breach

Medford, MA – March 27, 2025

A Tufts University undergraduate student was detained by federal authorities early this morning in connection with an alleged cybersecurity breach targeting multiple academic institutions. The student, identified as 21-year-old computer science major Jason Mercer, is suspected of involvement in a hacking scheme that compromised sensitive research data from several universities.

According to the FBI’s Boston Field Office, Mercer was taken into custody following a months-long investigation into a series of cyberattacks on university servers. Authorities allege that Mercer exploited vulnerabilities in campus networks to access proprietary academic research, including projects funded by government grants.

'This was a sophisticated operation that put intellectual property at risk,' said Special Agent Lisa Chen. 'We are working with affected institutions to assess the extent of the breach.'

Tufts University officials released a statement confirming Mercer’s status as a student but declined to comment further, citing the ongoing investigation. Mercer’s attorney, however, maintains his client’s innocence, calling the allegations 'overblown' and suggesting Mercer may have been conducting independent cybersecurity research.

If charged and convicted under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, Mercer could face significant prison time. The case has sparked debate on campus about cybersecurity ethics and student oversight.

Mercer is expected to appear in federal court later this week.
