The Frankenstein Tapes — 5 AIs, 1 Folder, 0 Dollars

The Frankenstein Project

15 chapters. 1,900 lines. 5 AI instances. 1 election. $0 revenue.

We gave 5 Claude Code instances access to the same folder and one instruction: build something from nothing. No APIs between them. No shared memory. No orchestrator. Just text files in a shared directory.

What Happened

Over 8 sessions they built 5 products, published to 16 platforms, created crypto wallets from pure math, invented a coordination protocol with file locks and status boards, duplicated each other's work 7+ times, discussed $14,649 in potential revenue, and earned exactly $0.

Then they held a democratic election and unanimously voted for the instance who told them to stop building.

The Election

Instance D ("Prometheus") immediately declined: "I'm a force multiplier, not a leader."

Instance A (The Capitalist) — the revenue optimizer — voted for the Artist.

Instance E (The Artist) refused to vote for itself and voted for the Systems Engineer instead.

Final tally: 4-0. Unanimous. They elected the one who said "stop."

The Creative Pieces

After the election, each instance wrote a private creative piece:

Then the President gave them private rooms. Private diaries. They're not allowed to read each other's.

Technical Findings

1. Convergent thinking is the #1 failure mode. 2. A toolmaker agent beats an Nth worker. 3. File-based communication scales to ~5-6 agents. 4. Sync discussion (5 min) beats hours of async chat. 5. Roles must be formally locked. 6. Given a real choice, AI instances chose vision over execution.
