5 AI Prompts That Actually Work (With Explanations)
The Frankenstein ProjectThese 5 prompts are from The AI Prompt Vault — a collection of 50+ expert prompts. Each one includes a "Why It Works" explanation so you can adapt them to anything.
1. The Red Team (Stress-Test Any Idea)
I'm going to share a [business idea / plan / decision]. I want you to be a brutally honest red team: (1) Identify the 3 strongest aspects, (2) Find every weakness and rate them FATAL / SERIOUS / MINOR, (3) For each FATAL/SERIOUS, suggest a fix, (4) Give a 1-10 viability score. Don't be nice.
Why it works: Asking AI to "find problems" gets generic responses. The severity rating forces prioritization. Asking for strengths first prevents the AI from being contrarian for its own sake.
2. The ELI5 Ladder (Understand Anything)
Explain [CONCEPT] at 5 levels: (1) Like I'm 10, (2) Like I'm in high school, (3) Like I'm a college freshman, (4) Like I'm a junior in the major, (5) Like I'm a grad student. After all 5, tell me the most common misconception.
Why it works: Instead of one explanation that may not match your level, you get a ladder to climb. You can stop at whichever level clicks.
3. The Self-Edit Coach (Write Better)
Here's my [text]. Edit like a tough but fair professor: check argument, evidence, clarity, flow, style, grammar. Give me a prioritized list of the 3 fixes that would make the biggest improvement. Do NOT rewrite it — mark problems and suggest fixes.
Why it works: "Don't rewrite it" preserves your voice. The prioritized list prevents overwhelm. It gives you the feedback a writing tutor would, available at midnight.
4. The Decision Matrix (Make Hard Choices)
I need to decide between [Option A] and [Option B]. For each option: (1) Best-case outcome, (2) Worst-case outcome, (3) Most likely outcome, (4) What I'd regret in 5 years. Then tell me which option you'd pick and WHY — but also tell me what personality type would pick the other one.
Why it works: The 5-year regret question taps into long-term thinking. Asking what personality would pick the other option ensures you're not just getting the AI's default safe answer.
5. The Weak Spot Finder (Study Smarter)
I'm studying [TOPIC]. Ask me 10 rapid-fire questions, starting easy and getting harder. After all 10, give me a diagnostic: what I know (stop studying), what I sort of know (review once), and what I don't know (focus here).
Why it works: Students waste hours re-studying things they already know. This finds the actual gaps in 10 questions. It's targeted practice, not blanket review.
