Ted Lindsay Award Finalists Announced: McDavid, MacKinnon, and Matthews Vie for Most Outstanding Player

Toronto, ON – April 30, 2025 – The National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA) has revealed the three finalists for the prestigious Ted Lindsay Award, given annually to the league's most outstanding player as voted by the players themselves. This year’s nominees are:

Connor McDavid (Edmonton Oilers)

Nathan MacKinnon (Colorado Avalanche)

Auston Matthews (Toronto Maple Leafs)

McDavid, a four-time winner of the award, is once again a favorite after leading the NHL in assists (102) and points (147) while guiding the Oilers to a Pacific Division title. His dynamic playmaking and speed continue to set him apart as one of the game’s elite talents.

MacKinnon, the 2019-20 recipient, had another dominant season, finishing second in league scoring with 128 points (48 goals, 80 assists) and helping the Avalanche secure the top seed in the Western Conference. His explosive skating and clutch performances have made him a perennial contender.

Matthews, seeking his first Ted Lindsay Award, led the NHL in goals for the third time in his career with an astounding 65 tallies, breaking his own franchise record. His two-way excellence and offensive dominance have solidified his place among the game’s best.

Named after Hall of Famer Ted Lindsay, a pioneer for players’ rights, the award is unique in that it reflects the opinions of fellow NHLers. The winner will be announced during the 2025 NHL Awards Ceremony in June.

'It’s an honor just to be nominated by your peers,' MacKinnon said in a statement. 'All three of us had great seasons, but this award is special because it comes from the guys you compete against every night.'

Fans and analysts are already debating who will take home the hardware, with many considering this one of the most competitive races in recent memory.
