Chapter 1: The Bridge

In the spring of 1968, Sergeant Daniel 'Danny' McCallister stood at the edge of a crumbling dirt road near Đông Hà, staring at the skeletal remains of a bombed-out bridge. His unit, Charlie Company, had been ordered to secure the crossing before the Viet Cong could reinforce their positions on the other side of the river.

Danny wasn’t a soldier by choice. Drafted straight out of college, he had left behind a quiet life in Ohio, trading textbooks for an M16. Now, as the humid air clung to his skin and the distant rumble of artillery echoed through the jungle, he wondered if he’d ever see home again.

Next to him, Private Jimmy Ruiz—a quick-witted kid from Brooklyn—chewed on a stick of gum like it was his last meal. 'You think they’ll actually send us over that thing?' he asked, nodding at the bridge.

Before Danny could answer, Lieutenant Harris barked orders. 'Move out! Single file, watch for tripwires!'

Chapter 2: Shadows in the Jungle

The crossing was tense. The bridge groaned under their weight, its wooden planks splintered and blackened from napalm strikes. Halfway across, a shot rang out.

Danny hit the deck as bullets whizzed overhead. From the dense foliage on the far bank, muzzle flashes flickered like fireflies. The Viet Cong had been waiting.

'Fall back!' Harris shouted, but it was too late for Corporal Jenkins, who slumped over the railing, a dark stain spreading across his chest.

Danny dragged Jenkins behind cover as Ruiz laid down suppressing fire. The jungle seemed alive—every rustle of leaves, every distant birdcall felt like an enemy scout.

Chapter 3: The Village

After a brutal firefight, Charlie Company pushed forward, clearing a small village suspected of harboring VC sympathizers. The huts were empty except for an old man and a young boy, no older than ten, who stared at the Americans with wide, fearful eyes.

Danny’s stomach twisted. He remembered the letters from his anti-war protester sister back home: 'You’re not liberating anyone, Danny. You’re just making more enemies.'

Ruiz handed the boy a chocolate bar. The kid hesitated, then snatched it and ran.

Chapter 4: The Ambush

That night, as rain turned the trails to mud, Charlie Company was ambushed. Mortar rounds exploded, turning the darkness into chaos. Danny found himself separated, crawling through the underbrush as shadows moved around him.

Then, a voice—Vietnamese, but speaking broken English: 'You… hurt?'

A young Viet Cong fighter, barely older than a teenager, stood over him, rifle raised. For a heartbeat, they locked eyes. Danny saw no hatred—just exhaustion, fear.

A burst of gunfire. The VC soldier collapsed. Ruiz emerged from the trees, panting. 'You okay, Sarge?'

Danny didn’t answer.

Chapter 5: The Letter

Months later, Danny sat on a transport plane heading home. In his pocket was a crumpled letter from his sister: 'Come back safe.'

He closed his eyes, but all he could see were the faces—Jenkins, the village boy, the young VC soldier. The war wasn’t just battles and body counts. It was people, on both sides, just trying to survive.

As the plane climbed into the sky, Danny wondered if the echoes of Đông Hà would ever fade.
