St. Louis Cardinals Make Blockbuster Trade Ahead of Deadline, Acquire Star Pitcher

St. Louis, MO — July 29, 2024 — In a bold move to bolster their playoff hopes, the St. Louis Cardinals have pulled off a major trade just days before the MLB deadline, acquiring All-Star pitcher Luis Castillo from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for top prospects.

The deal, finalized late last night, sends right-handed pitcher Tink Hence, outfielder Victor Scott II, and a player to be named later to Seattle in exchange for Castillo, a two-time All-Star with a career 3.45 ERA. The 31-year-old flamethrower is under contract through 2027, giving the Cardinals a long-term ace to pair with Sonny Gray and Miles Mikolas in their rotation.

Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak called the move a 'calculated push' for October. 'Luis is a proven winner with elite stuff, and we believe he’s the missing piece to take this team deep into the postseason,' Mozeliak said in a press conference this morning.

Castillo, who went 9-6 with a 3.12 ERA for the Mariners this season, expressed excitement about joining a contender. 'St. Louis is a baseball city with incredible fans. I can’t wait to take the mound at Busch Stadium,' he said in a statement.

The trade has energized a Cardinals squad that has surged in July, climbing within 2.5 games of the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers. Manager Oliver Marmol hinted that more moves could be coming before Tuesday’s deadline.

Fans reacted with a mix of excitement and bittersweet sentiment over losing top prospects, but many agree: the Cardinals are all-in for 2024.
