CIA's Secret Files Hint at Ongoing Search for the Ark of the Covenant

Newly declassified CIA documents have reignited speculation about the U.S. government’s interest in one of history’s most sacred—and mysterious—artifacts: the Ark of the Covenant. According to the files, intelligence agencies have periodically investigated claims regarding the Ark’s whereabouts, with some reports suggesting it may still hold 'unexplained significance.'

A Biblical Mystery

The Ark of the Covenant, described in the Hebrew Bible as a gold-covered wooden chest containing the tablets of the Ten Commandments, is said to possess immense power. It vanished from historical records after the Babylonian conquest of Jerusalem in 587 BCE, leading to centuries of speculation. Some theories place it in Ethiopia, while others claim it was hidden beneath Jerusalem’s Temple Mount.

CIA’s Curiosity

The declassified memos, obtained through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, reveal that the CIA monitored rumors about the Ark during the Cold War. One 1979 report discusses intelligence from an informant in the Middle East who claimed that a 'powerful artifact' matching the Ark’s description was being guarded by a secretive religious order. Another document from 1987 references satellite imagery analysis of possible underground chambers in Ethiopia, where the Ark is said to reside in the Church of St. Mary of Zion.

While the CIA has not confirmed any active search, experts note that the agency has a history of investigating paranormal and religious phenomena—particularly during periods of geopolitical tension.

Modern-Day Hunters

The revelations have energized treasure hunters and biblical scholars alike. 'If the CIA was looking into this, it means the Ark is still considered a matter of strategic interest,' said Dr. Jonathan Greer, an archaeologist specializing in ancient religious artifacts.

Meanwhile, Ethiopian authorities maintain that the Ark has been safeguarded in Axum for centuries, dismissing outside claims as conspiracy theories. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church strictly forbids outsiders from viewing the artifact, adding to its mystique.

Skepticism and Intrigue

Despite the excitement, many remain skeptical. 'The CIA explored a lot of fringe theories during the Cold War—psychic spies, UFOs, you name it,' said former intelligence analyst Mark Phillips. 'This could just be another dead-end lead.'
