Local Hero Shashank Singh Saves Child from Drowning in Ganges

Varanasi, June 10, 2024 — In a heart-stopping act of bravery, 28-year-old Shashank Singh rescued a 10-year-old boy from the strong currents of the Ganges River yesterday evening. The incident occurred near the Dashashwamedh Ghat, where the child, identified as Rohan Mishra, had slipped while playing near the water’s edge.

Eyewitnesses reported that Singh, a local fitness trainer, immediately jumped into the river without hesitation when he heard the boy’s cries for help. Despite the dangerous undercurrents, Singh managed to reach Rohan and bring him safely back to shore.

'Shashank didn’t think twice—he just dove in,' said Priya Sharma, a bystander who recorded part of the rescue. 'It was incredible to see someone risk their life like that.'

Rohan was reunited with his family and received medical attention but is reported to be in stable condition. The local administration has announced that Singh will be honored with the Uttar Pradesh Bravery Award for his selfless act.

When asked about his heroic deed, Singh humbly stated, 'I just did what anyone would have done. Seeing the child safe is all the reward I need.'

The incident has sparked renewed calls for better safety measures along the ghats, especially during the monsoon season when water levels rise unpredictably.
