Barbara Bush Foundation Announces Nationwide Literacy Initiative
Houston, TX – April 10, 2025

Former First Lady Barbara Bush’s legacy of promoting literacy continues to flourish as the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy unveils a bold new initiative aimed at combating illiteracy rates across the United States.

The program, dubbed 'Read Across Generations,' will provide free books, digital resources, and tutoring services to underserved communities in all 50 states. With a $50 million grant from a coalition of private donors and corporate sponsors, the initiative seeks to empower families by improving reading skills among both children and adults.

'My grandmother believed that literacy was the key to unlocking opportunity,' said Jenna Bush Hager, a board member of the foundation and co-chair of the campaign. 'This expansion honors her vision by ensuring that every family, regardless of background, has access to the tools they need to succeed.'

The announcement comes on what would have been Barbara Bush’s 100th birthday. The late First Lady, who passed away in 2018, was a lifelong advocate for education, founding the literacy foundation in 1989. Since then, the organization has impacted millions of lives through grants and community programs.

New research shows that nearly 30 million American adults struggle with basic reading, a statistic the foundation hopes to dramatically reduce. The initiative will partner with schools, libraries, and nonprofits to distribute books and host workshops.

'Barbara Bush once said, ‘If you help people to read, you give them a chance to dream,’' said British Robinson, CEO of the Barbara Bush Foundation. 'That dream is more important than ever.'

The first phase of 'Read Across Generations' will launch this fall, with a focus on rural and urban areas with the highest literacy gaps.
