Paul Giamatti to Star in New HBO Limited Series 'The Last Tycoon'

Los Angeles, May 23, 2025 – Academy Award-nominated actor Paul Giamatti is set to lead HBO’s upcoming limited series The Last Tycoon, a gripping drama about the rise and fall of a ruthless media mogul in the 1980s. The project, which has been in development for over a year, marks Giamatti’s return to premium television following his critically acclaimed role in Billions.

According to HBO, The Last Tycoon will explore themes of power, ambition, and betrayal, with Giamatti playing the enigmatic and cutthroat billionaire Vincent Crowe. The series is written by Succession alum Mark Mylod and produced by Plan B Entertainment.

'Paul is one of the most versatile actors of his generation, and this role was tailor-made for him,' said HBO’s Head of Drama, Sarah Aubrey. 'His ability to balance charm and menace makes him the perfect fit for this complex character.'

Giamatti, known for his standout performances in Sideways, John Adams, and The Holdovers, has been enjoying a career resurgence in recent years. His portrayal of a cunning hedge fund manager in Billions earned him widespread praise, and his recent indie film The Curious Case of Mr. Holloway has been generating early Oscar buzz.

Production for The Last Tycoon is expected to begin this fall, with a tentative release date in late 2026. Fans of Giamatti’s work can also look forward to his upcoming role in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, where he will star alongside Jacob Elordi and Christoph Waltz.
