Academy Award Nominee Paul Giamatti to Star in New HBO Miniseries 'The Last Stand'

Los Angeles, May 23, 2025 – HBO has officially announced its newest prestige miniseries, The Last Stand, with acclaimed actor Paul Giamatti set to lead the cast. The project, described as a gripping historical drama, will explore the final days of a once-great newspaper empire in 1970s New York.

Giamatti, fresh off his Golden Globe-winning performance in The Holdovers, will play Walter Pierce, a hard-nosed editor struggling to preserve journalistic integrity amid corporate takeovers and shifting media landscapes. The series is being penned by Mad Men alum Matthew Weiner and directed by The Queen’s Gambit helmer Scott Frank.

'Paul is one of the most versatile actors of his generation, and this role feels tailor-made for his talents,' said HBO’s Head of Programming, Amy Gravitt. 'His ability to balance wit, vulnerability, and intensity makes him the perfect anchor for this story.'

Giamatti, known for his roles in Sideways, Billions, and John Adams, expressed enthusiasm for the project, calling it 'a love letter to a bygone era of journalism—and a cautionary tale for today.'

Production is set to begin this fall, with an expected premiere in late 2026.
