BREAKING NEWS: London Marathon 2025 Sees Record-Breaking Finishes and Emotional Triumphs

London, UK – April 27, 2025 – The 45th London Marathon took the city by storm today, with over 50,000 runners taking to the streets in perfect racing conditions. The event, known for its incredible atmosphere and world-class competition, did not disappoint, delivering dramatic finishes, record-breaking performances, and heartwarming stories of perseverance.

Elite Race Highlights

In the men’s elite race, Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola shattered the course record with a blistering time of 2:01:25, becoming the first man to break the 2:02 barrier in London. Defending champion Kenenisa Bekele pushed hard but finished second in 2:02:47, while Britain’s Emile Cairess thrilled home crowds with a third-place finish (2:05:30), setting a new British record.

The women’s race was equally thrilling, with Kenya’s Peres Jepchirchir securing her third major marathon victory in a sprint finish, clocking 2:15:33—just three seconds ahead of Ethiopia’s Yalemzerf Yehualaw. Meanwhile, Eilish McColgan, returning from injury, delighted British fans by finishing fifth in a personal best of 2:18:12.

Wheelchair Records Smashed

The wheelchair races saw history made as Switzerland’s Marcel Hug continued his dominance, winning in 1:20:05, the fastest time ever recorded on the London course. In the women’s race, Catherine Debrunner of Switzerland also set a new course record (1:34:22), narrowly defeating Britain’s Eden Rainbow-Cooper.

Inspiring Stories from the Mass Race

Beyond the elites, the London Marathon lived up to its reputation as one of the world’s most inclusive races. Among the finishers was Tom Harrison, a 68-year-old cancer survivor who completed his 30th consecutive London Marathon, and Sophie Davies, who ran in memory of her late father, raising over £50,000 for a heart disease charity.

Celebrities also joined the cause, with actor Tom Holland completing the race in 3 hours 28 minutes and TV presenter AJ Odudu finishing her first marathon despite a last-minute ankle injury.

A Boost for Charity

Preliminary estimates suggest this year’s event has raised over £65 million for various charities, setting a new fundraising record. Organizers praised the resilience of runners and the unwavering support of spectators who lined the 26.2-mile route.

London Marathon Event Director Hugh Brasher hailed the 2025 race as 'one of the greatest in history,' adding, 'Today showed the very best of human spirit—speed, endurance, and the power of community.'
