Local Hero John Jessup Saves Family from Burning Building

Springfield, IL – May 22, 2024

In a dramatic rescue early this morning, local electrician and volunteer firefighter John Jessup risked his life to save a family of four from a burning apartment building on Elm Street.

According to witnesses, the fire broke out around 3:30 a.m., likely due to an electrical malfunction in the building’s basement. Flames quickly spread, trapping the Henderson family on the third floor.

Jessup, 34, who lives just two blocks away, was alerted by the sound of sirens and rushed to the scene. Despite firefighters still en route, he entered the smoke-filled building without hesitation, using a ladder from a neighbor’s garage to reach the family’s window.

'John was a total hero,' said Maria Henderson, one of the rescued residents. 'We were coughing, barely able to breathe, and then suddenly he was there, helping us climb down to safety.'

Springfield Fire Chief Daniel O’Connor praised Jessup’s quick thinking. 'His actions were incredibly brave. Without his intervention, this could have been a tragedy.'

Jessup, humble as ever, downplayed his role. 'I just did what anyone would do. I’m glad the family is okay.'

The Hendersons suffered minor smoke inhalation but are expected to make a full recovery. Meanwhile, the community has already begun calling Jessup a local legend.

A fundraiser has been set up to help the displaced family, and Mayor Lisa Thornton has announced that Jessup will be honored at next week’s city council meeting.
