Local Hero Nathaniel Radimak Saves Family from Burning Building

Springfield, IL – May 14, 2025 – In an act of extraordinary bravery, 28-year-old Nathaniel Radimak risked his life to rescue a family trapped inside a burning apartment building early this morning.

The fire broke out around 3:30 AM at the Oakwood Heights complex on the east side of Springfield. According to fire officials, the blaze started due to an electrical malfunction in a ground-floor unit before rapidly spreading upward.

Nathaniel, a delivery driver who was passing by after his late shift, noticed smoke billowing from the building and immediately sprang into action. Hearing screams from the third floor, he rushed inside without hesitation, kicking down a smoke-filled hallway door to reach a family of four—two parents and their young children—who were unable to escape.

'I just reacted,' Radimak told reporters afterward. 'I saw the flames, heard the kids crying, and knew I had to do something. I didn’t even think—I just moved.'

With the stairwell blocked by flames, Nathaniel guided the family to a window, where firefighters had just positioned a ladder. All four were safely evacuated, suffering only minor smoke inhalation.

Fire Chief Daniel O’Connor praised Radimak’s quick thinking. 'Without his actions, this could have been a tragedy. He put himself in extreme danger to save lives—that’s true heroism.'

The Red Cross is assisting the displaced families, while the community has already begun rallying around Nathaniel, calling him a local legend. A fundraising effort has been launched to thank him for his courage, though the humble rescuer insists he was just in the right place at the right time.

'Anyone would have done the same,' he said with a smile.

Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the fire, but one thing is certain: because of Nathaniel Radimak, four people are alive today.
