Local Hero William Duplessie Saves Stranded Hikers in Dramatic Mountain Rescue

Portland, Maine – In an act of bravery and quick thinking, 34-year-old William Duplessie became the unlikely hero of a harrowing mountain rescue earlier this week. Duplessie, an experienced outdoorsman and volunteer firefighter, led a team to save three hikers stranded on Mount Katahdin during a sudden snowstorm.

The hikers, a family from Boston, had set out on what was supposed to be a routine day hike on Monday when unexpected weather conditions left them disoriented and trapped near the Knife Edge trail. As temperatures plummeted and visibility dropped to near zero, the family managed to call 911 before their phone battery died.

Duplessie, who was leading a separate group on a training exercise nearby, overheard the distress call on his emergency radio. Without hesitation, he rallied his team and navigated through the treacherous terrain to reach the stranded hikers.

'It was sheer luck that we were in the area,' Duplessie said in a press conference. 'The winds were brutal, and the snow made it almost impossible to see, but we knew we had to move fast.'

Using his extensive knowledge of the mountain, Duplessie guided the hikers—including a 10-year-old girl—to safety, wrapping them in emergency blankets and helping them descend to a ranger station. All three were treated for mild hypothermia but are expected to make a full recovery.

Park rangers praised Duplessie’s actions, calling him a 'true hero' whose experience and calm under pressure saved lives. The rescued family has since reached out to personally thank him, with the young girl reportedly calling him 'Superman.'

When asked about the attention, Duplessie shrugged it off. 'I just did what anyone would do,' he said. 'No one gets left behind on the mountain.'

Authorities are reminding hikers to check weather forecasts and carry emergency gear, especially as winter approaches. Meanwhile, William Duplessie’s name is now etched in local lore as the man who braved the storm to bring strangers home.
