Origins of LSD

LSD, also known as Lysergic acid diethylamide, was first synthesized in 1938 by Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann. Hofmann was working for the pharmaceutical company Sandoz, and he accidentally ingested a small amount of LSD while working on the compound. Hofmann experienced vivid hallucinations, and this inspired him to further study the effects of the drug. In 1943, Hofmann intentionally ingested a larger amount of LSD and experienced a full-blown psychedelic trip, which led to the discovery of LSD's potent hallucinogenic properties.

The psychedelic effects of LSD quickly gained popularity among the counterculture movement of the 1960s. Many artists, musicians, and spiritual seekers believed that LSD could help unlock the doors of perception and lead to higher states of consciousness. However, as its use became more widespread, concerns over its safety and potential for abuse led to its eventual criminalization. Despite this, LSD remains a fascinating substance that has captured the imaginations of scientists, artists, and explorers alike.

Forms of LSD

LSD can present in a variety of different forms such as:

📌 Blotter Paper

This is by far the most common form of LSD, which involves dropping a small amount of the liquid LSD solution onto small squares of absorbent paper, which are then cut into individual doses.

📌 Liquid

LSD can also be dissolved in a liquid, such as water or alcohol, and then administered using a dropper or syringe. This form of LSD is typically used for microdosing.

📌 Gel Tabs

LSD can be mixed with a gelatinous substance to create small squares or tabs. This form of LSD is less common than blotter paper, but it can be more potent and longer-lasting.

📌 Pills

LSD can be pressed into tablets, although this form of LSD is relatively rare.

Appearance

In it's most common "blotter" form, LSD appears as a seemingly innocent piece of thick paper. It usually has some kind of psychedelic design or pattern imprinted on it.

Positive Effects

Subjective positive effects may include:

📌 Increased creativity.

📌 Altered perception of reality: LSD can produce profound changes in perception, such as altered colors and shapes, which some people find fascinating and enlightening.

📌 Improved mood.

📌 Euphoria.

📌 Spiritual experiences: Some users report experiencing profound spiritual or mystical experiences while under the influence of LSD.

📌 Reduction in anxiety and depression: Some research has suggested that LSD may have therapeutic benefits for people with anxiety and depresion.

Negative Effects

Although LSD has a strong safety profile, some users may experience negative effects including:

📌 Anxiety and paranoia (the risk is higher in people who are predisposed to these conditions).

📌 Flashbacks: Some people who have used LSD report experiencing flashbacks, or brief episodes of psychedelic experiences, long after the drug has left their system.

📌 Hallucinations. Whilst most people may find the hallucinations produced by LSD to be fascinating or enlightening, some may find them frightening or disturbing.

📌 Physical side effects such as dilated pupils, increased heart rate, and high blood pressure.

📌 Rarely LSD can cauae disruptive behavior, agitation or aggression.

📌 LSD can impair coordination and perception, which can increase the risk of accidents or injuries.

📌 In rare cases, LSD can produce a psychotic episode, which can involve a loss of touch with reality, delusions, and hallucinations.

Addiction

LSD is considered generally to not be not addictive. However users can build up a tolerance to the substance, requiring increasing doses to achieve the desired effects.

If you or someone you care about is struggling with addiction, please visit the UKP Addiction Page, and check our some of the links in the Web Resources section towards the end of this page.

Routes of Administration

Different ROAs include:

📌 Oral ingestion

By far the most common route of administration for LSD is through oral ingestion, typically in the form of a small piece of paper (blotter) or gelatin capsule. The drug is absorbed through the lining of the stomach and small intestine.

📌 Sublingual administration

LSD can also be administered sublingually, by placing a small tab or drop of the drug under the tongue. This method allows for faster absorption and may produce stronger effects.

📌 Intravenous injection

In rare cases, LSD can be administered through intravenous injection. However, this method is highly uncommon and carries significant risks, such as infection, overdose, and damage to veins.

📌 Intramuscular injection

Like intravenous injection, LSD can also be administered through intramuscular injection, but this method is highly uncommon and carries significant risks.

Onset Time and Duration

Users can expect an onset time of between 15-30 minutes and a come-up time of 45-90 minutes. Peak effects are usually felt between 3-5 hours. After effects (known as afterglow) can last up to 48 hours.

Potential Risky Interactions

Potentially risky interactions include:

📌 Stimulants such as cocaine or amphetamines

These drugs can increase heart rate and blood pressure, leading to a higher risk of cardiovascular problems.

📌 Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs):

These drugs are used to treat depression and other mental health conditions, but they can also interact with LSD and cause potentially dangerous effects such as serotonin syndrome.

📌 Antidepressants

Some antidepressant medications can interact with LSD and increase the risk of serotonin syndrome, a potentially life-threatening condition that can cause high fever, seizures, and other serious symptoms.

📌 Antipsychotics

These medications can interact with LSD and increase the risk of side effects such as confusion, agitation, and delusionqqs.

📌 Benzodiazepines

These drugs are sometimes used to help people manage anxiety or reduce the intensity of an LSD trip, but they can also interact with LSD and increase the risk of respiratory depression or other dangerous effects. This is especially relevant if alcohol or opiates are systematic. Benzodiazepines can be a useful tool to kill a bad trip when used correctly.

Detection Times

Detection times are subjective and the below are guidelines only. The best way to pass a drug test is to not take drugs.

LSD isn't screened for on standard drug tests so you're likely safe unless you are being tested specifically for it. If so, below at are the detection times:

📌 Urine

When tested for, up to 2-4 days is the detection window for LSD in urine.

📌 Blood

Blood testing for LSD offers the shortest detection window of only up to 6-12 hours

📌 Hair

As is common, when tested for in hair, trace amounts of LSD could be detectable for up to 90 days.

General Safety Tips

We always encourage basic safety precautions and health maintenance before and during drug use, should you decide to use them. Here are some basic tips:

📌 Test your drugs where possible, especially if you're buying from an unknown source.

📌 A lot of people use benzodiazepines or other pharmaceutical sleeping tablets to kill a comedown. We urge extreme caution when doing this (especially if you've had alcohol too) and recommend trying more natural sleep aids such as melatonin to see if they work for you.

📌 Always start with a low dose and work your way up slowly to avoid the risk of adverse effects. The effects of some substances can be unpredictable, and individual sensitivity can vary greatly.

📌 Use in a safe and comfortable environment: Use substances in a safe and comfortable environment, preferably with someone you trust who can assist you if necessary. Avoid crowded or unfamiliar places that could cause anxiety or distress.

📌 Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, but be careful not to drink too much as this can lead to hyponatremia (low sodium levels in the blood), which can be life-threatening.

📌 Be careful when combining with other drugs. Research what drugs interact with each other an risk adverse effects.

📌 Take breaks between uses. As a general rule limit your use to 1-2 times per week.

📌 Seek medical attention if necessary. Your health is an absolute priority and not worth risk because you fear somebody finding out about your drug use.

📌 We recommend that you take a multi-vitamin the morning after or with food and take liver function tablets the morning of the day of drug use and again the morning after. Drink plenty of water before bed after use. If you take drugs every week then take liver function tablets every day. However, we recommend that if you choose to use drugs, then try to limit use to 1-2 times per week maximum.
