Origins of 2C-B

2C-B is a synthetic psychoactive substance that was first synthesised by the American pchemist Alexander Shulgin in 1974. Shulgin was known for his interest in psychoactive compounds, and he developed 2C-B as part of his research into the effects of psychedelic drugs. The substance quickly gained popularity among the psychedelic subculture in the United States in the late 1970s and 1980s. It was originally sold as a legal alternative to MDMA (ecstasy), which had been made illegal in 1985. However, 2C-B was eventually also made illegal in many countries due to its potential for abuse and its association with several deaths.

The origins of 2C-B's name are not entirely clear, but it is believed to stand for "2,5-dimethoxy-4-bromophenethylamine". This chemical name refers to the structure of the molecule, which is derived from the phenethylamine family of compounds. 2C-B belongs to a larger class of psychoactive substances known as phenethylamines, which also includes compounds such as mescaline and MDMA. The effects of 2C-B are similar to those of other psychedelics, but the drug is known for its relatively mild and manageable effects, as well as its short duration of action compared to other substances in its class.

Forms of 2C-B

2C-B can be found in a number of forms including:

πŸ“Œ Pills. These have recently emerged as the most common form of 2C-B.

πŸ“Œ Raw powder. This used to be the most common, it is a white/off-white powder that is snorted. It carries a notorious reputation for being unpleasant to sniff.

πŸ“Œ Liquid. It would be unusual to find this outside of a research environment.

Appearance

Pills can take many novel shapes, sizes and colours depending on manufacturer. Powder is white/off-white.

Positive Effects

Subjective positive effects include:

πŸ“Œ Enhanced mood and euphoria.

πŸ“Œ Increased social interaction and intimacy.

πŸ“Œ Increased creativity.

πŸ“Œ Altered perception: 2C-B can alter perception, making colors appear brighter and more vivid, and can also produce synesthesia, where different sensory experiences are blended together.

πŸ“Œ Enhanced sexual experience: 2C-B is often used as a sexual enhancer, as it can increase sexual desire, intensify sensations, and prolong orgasms.

πŸ“Œ Reduced anxiety.

Negative Effects

In rare cases negative effects can occur, such as:

πŸ“Œ Anxiety and paranoia: 2C-B can induce anxiety and paranoia, (particularly at higher doses or in those who are prone to anxiety or panic attacks).

πŸ“Œ Nausea and vomiting (particularly when taken on an empty stomach).

πŸ“Œ Headaches.

πŸ“Œ Increased heart rate and blood pressure.

πŸ“Œ Psychosis: In rare cases, 2C-B can induce psychosis, which can include symptoms such as delusions, hallucinations, and distorted thinking.

Addiction

While 2C-B is not considered to be highly addictive, regular use can lead to dependence and addiction, particularly in those with a history of substance abuse.

If you or someone you care about is struggling with addiction, please visit the UKP Addiction Page, and check our some of the links in the Web Resources section towards the end of this page.

Routes of Administration

2C-B can be taken in various ways, including:

πŸ“Œ Oral ingestion

The most common route of administration for 2C-B is oral ingestion, usually in the form of pills, capsules, or powder.

πŸ“Œ Insufflation

2C-B can also be snorted, which can produce a more rapid onset of effects but may also increase the risk of adverse effects.

πŸ“Œ Rectal administration

Some users choose to administer 2C-B rectally, typically using a liquid solution, which can produce a more rapid onset of effects and may increase the potency of the experience.

πŸ“Œ Intravenous injection

Intravenous injection of 2C-B is possible, but it is not common due to the potential risks associated with injecting any substance.

Dosaging

Oral

Onset Time and Duration

Taken orally

Users can expect an onset time of 20-40 minutes, and to experience a "come-up" around 40-60 minutes after ingestion. Peak effects should be felt around 2-3 hours with a total duration from ingestion to come-down of anywhere between 5-8 hours.

Potential Risky Interactions

2C-B can produce adverse effects with mixed with other drugs. For example:

πŸ“Œ MDMA, SSRIs, or MAOIs

Any drug that increases serotonin can increase the chances of serotonin syndrome. 2C-B is a serotonin receptor agonist, and as such, it should not be taken in combination with other drugs that increase serotonin levels, such as MDMA, SSRIs, or MAOIs. Serotonin syndrome can cause symptoms such as agitation, confusion, sweating, and in severe cases, seizures, and can be life-threatening.

πŸ“Œ Stimulant drugs

2C-B can increase heart rate and blood pressure, and should not be combined with other stimulant drugs such as cocaine, amphetamines, or methylphenidate, as this can increase the risk of cardiovascular complications.

πŸ“Œ Alcohol and sedatives

2C-B can increase the sedative effects of alcohol and other sedative drugs such as benzodiazepines and barbiturates, which can increase the risk of respiratory depression and overdose.

πŸ“Œ Other psychedelics

Combining 2C-B with other psychedelics such as LSD, psilocybin, or DMT can increase the risk of adverse psychological effects such as anxiety, paranoia, and hallucinations.

Detection Times

Detection times are subjective and the below are guidelines only. The best way to pass a drug test is to not take drugs.

The general concensus is that 2C-B won't show up on any stanard drug screening. They would have to be specifically testing for 2C-B, which is so uncommon that information about detection times isn't widely known or readily available.

General Safety Tips

We always encourage basic safety precautions and health maintenance before and during drug use, should you decide to use them. Here are some basic tips:

πŸ“Œ Test your drugs where possible, especially if you're buying from an unknown source.

πŸ“Œ A lot of people use benzodiazepines or other pharmaceutical sleeping tablets to kill a comedown. We urge extreme caution when doing this (especially if you've had alcohol too) and recommend trying more natural sleep aids such as melatonin to see if they work for you.

πŸ“Œ Always start with a low dose and work your way up slowly to avoid the risk of adverse effects. The effects of some substances can be unpredictable, and individual sensitivity can vary greatly.

πŸ“Œ Use in a safe and comfortable environment: Use substances in a safe and comfortable environment, preferably with someone you trust who can assist you if necessary. Avoid crowded or unfamiliar places that could cause anxiety or distress.

πŸ“Œ Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, but be careful not to drink too much as this can lead to hyponatremia (low sodium levels in the blood), which can be life-threatening.

πŸ“Œ Be careful when combining with other drugs. Research what drugs interact with each other an risk adverse effects.

πŸ“Œ Take breaks between uses. As a general rule limit your use to 1-2 times per week.

πŸ“Œ Seek medical attention if necessary. Your health is an absolute priority and not worth risk because you fear somebody finding out about your drug use.

πŸ“Œ We recommend that you take a multi-vitamin the morning after or with food and take liver function tablets the morning of the day of drug use and again the morning after. Drink plenty of water before bed after use. If you take drugs every week then take liver function tablets every day. However, we recommend that if you choose to use drugs, then try to limit use to 1-2 times per week maximum.
