Kroger Abruptly Shuts Down Home Delivery Service, Leaving Customers and Employees in Limbo

Cincinnati, OH – May 19, 2025 – In a surprising move, Kroger announced today the immediate shutdown of its home delivery service, Kroger Home Delivery, citing 'operational restructuring' as the primary reason. The decision has left thousands of customers without their grocery delivery options and has raised concerns among employees about potential job cuts.

Sudden Discontinuation Stuns Shoppers

Kroger, one of the largest grocery chains in the U.S., had expanded its home delivery service in recent years to compete with rivals like Walmart, Amazon Fresh, and Instacart. However, in an internal memo obtained by The Grocery Gazette, Kroger executives stated that the service was 'no longer sustainable' due to rising logistics costs and shifting consumer preferences toward pickup services.

Customers who relied on the service for weekly grocery deliveries expressed frustration over the abrupt closure, with many taking to social media to voice their displeasure.

'I’m a senior citizen who depends on Kroger’s delivery—now what am I supposed to do?' tweeted Martha Reynolds from Columbus, Ohio.

Employee Uncertainty and Potential Layoffs

The shutdown has also sparked concerns among Kroger’s delivery drivers and fulfillment staff. While the company has stated that affected employees will be offered positions in other departments, union representatives warn that many workers could face layoffs.

'This is another example of corporate decisions hurting frontline workers,' said United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 75 spokesperson Derek Mitchell. 'We demand transparency from Kroger about job security.'

What’s Next for Kroger?

Analysts suggest that Kroger may be reallocating resources toward its pickup services and its automated fulfillment centers, which have seen higher profit margins. The company’s pending merger with Albertsons, still under regulatory review, could also play a role in the sudden shift.

For now, Kroger has directed customers to use its pickup service or partner delivery apps like Instacart. However, the move marks a significant retreat from the direct-to-consumer delivery market—a space Kroger had heavily invested in just a few years ago.
