K-State Women's Basketball Triumphs Over Baylor

K-State Women’s Basketball Stuns No. 5 Baylor in Thrilling Overtime Victory

Manhattan, KS – March 30, 2025 – In a game that will go down as one of the most thrilling in program history, the Kansas State Wildcats pulled off a stunning 78-75 overtime upset against the fifth-ranked Baylor Lady Bears at Bramlage Coliseum on Saturday night.

Led by a career-high 28 points from junior guard Serena Smith and a clutch three-pointer in the final seconds of regulation by senior Maya Johnson, the Wildcats (22-9, 12-6 Big 12) secured their biggest win of the season, bolstering their NCAA Tournament résumé.

The game was a back-and-forth battle from the opening tip, with neither team leading by more than seven points. Baylor (26-5, 15-3) appeared to have the game in hand, holding a 68-65 lead with just 10 seconds left in regulation. But after a timeout, Johnson dribbled up the court and drained a deep three over Baylor’s All-American defender Aaliyah Thompson, sending the sold-out crowd of 10,000 into a frenzy and forcing overtime.

In the extra period, K-State’s defense locked down, forcing three Baylor turnovers, while Smith scored six of her 28 points to seal the victory. Freshman forward Emma Carter also made a crucial block in the final seconds to preserve the win.

Head Coach Jaida Williams, in her second season with the Wildcats, called the victory a 'program-defining moment.'

'This team never quits,' Williams said. 'We’ve been building toward this all season, and to see them execute under pressure against one of the best teams in the country—it’s special.'

The Wildcats now await their NCAA Tournament seeding, with projections placing them as a potential No. 6 seed. Meanwhile, Baylor, which had already secured the Big 12 regular-season title, will look to regroup before the postseason.

K-State fans stormed the court in celebration, marking the program’s first win over a top-five opponent since 2019. With momentum on their side, the Wildcats are ready to make noise in March.

Up Next: K-State will head to the Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City as the No. 4 seed, facing Texas Tech in the quarterfinals on Friday.
