Josh Freese Officially Joins Foo Fighters as Full-Time Drummer

Los Angeles, May 17, 2025 – The Foo Fighters have officially announced Josh Freese as their new permanent drummer, solidifying his role after more than a year of touring with the band. The decision comes following Freese’s dynamic performances since joining the group in 2023 after the tragic passing of longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins.

Frontman Dave Grohl shared the news in an exclusive interview with Rolling Stone, praising Freese’s musicianship and chemistry with the band. 'Josh isn’t just an incredible drummer—he’s family,' Grohl said. 'He stepped into an impossible situation with respect, talent, and heart, and we couldn’t imagine moving forward without him.'

Freese, a seasoned session and touring drummer known for his work with Devo, Nine Inch Nails, and The Vandals, initially joined as a touring member. However, his seamless integration into the band’s live shows and studio sessions made the decision to make him an official member inevitable.

Fans have embraced Freese’s high-energy performances, particularly during the Foo Fighters’ recent But Here We Are tour, where he paid tribute to Hawkins while bringing his own signature style.

With Freese now a permanent fixture, the band is set to begin recording their 12th studio album later this year. 'The future’s bright,' Freese said. 'Taylor’s spirit is always with us, and I’m honored to help carry the Foo Fighters’ legacy forward.'

The announcement ends months of speculation and cements Freese’s place in one of rock’s biggest acts.
