Jonathan Majors Secures Lead Role in Upcoming Spike Lee Biopic

Los Angeles, April 9, 2025 — Academy Award-nominated actor Jonathan Majors has been cast as the lead in Spike Lee’s highly anticipated new biopic, King of the Ring, portraying the life of legendary boxer Jack Johnson. The project, set to begin filming this summer, marks Majors’ first major role since his career resurgence following his 2024 trial.

Majors, known for his powerful performances in The Harder They Fall, Creed III, and Lovecraft Country, has been selectively taking on projects over the past year. Industry insiders say his casting in Lee’s film signals a major comeback.

'Jack Johnson’s story is one of resilience, defiance, and triumph—themes that resonate deeply with me,' Majors said in a statement. 'Working with Spike is a dream, and I’m ready to bring this icon’s journey to life.'

Lee, who has long wanted to make a film about Johnson—the first Black heavyweight champion—called Majors 'the perfect actor to capture his complexity.'

The film is set for a late 2026 release, with production beginning in Chicago and Louisiana.

Meanwhile, Majors continues to rebuild his career, with rumors of a possible return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe still unconfirmed.
