Islanders' Head Coach Lane Lambert Faces Scrutiny After Disappointing Start to Season

UNIONDALE, NY — The New York Islanders' rocky start to the 2024-25 NHL season has put head coach Lane Lambert under the microscope, with fans and analysts questioning whether he is the right man to lead the team forward.

After a promising preseason, the Islanders have stumbled out of the gate, posting a 2-5-1 record in their first eight games. The team’s defensive structure—a hallmark of Lambert’s system—has looked shaky, and the power play remains among the league’s worst, converting at just 12.3%.

General manager Lou Lamoriello has remained publicly supportive of Lambert, telling reporters yesterday, 'We believe in this group and our coaching staff. It’s early, and we need to find consistency.' However, sources within the organization suggest that patience may be wearing thin if the team doesn’t turn things around soon.

Lambert, who took over for Barry Trotz in 2022, led the Islanders to a playoff berth last season but was criticized for the team’s lack of offensive creativity. Now, with key players like Mathew Barzal and Bo Horvat underperforming, pressure is mounting.

'Lane’s a good coach, but the league adjusts quickly,' said one anonymous NHL scout. 'If the Isles don’t start winning soon, changes could happen.'

The Islanders face a tough stretch of games this month, including matchups against the Rangers, Bruins, and Devils. How Lambert navigates this stretch could determine his future behind the bench.

For now, the message in the locker room remains focused on improvement. 'We have to be better, plain and simple,' said captain Anders Lee. 'It’s on all of us, not just the coaches.'
